SimpleX is great, I use it. It definitely has its applications but even now is still pretty buggy. This list is for normal folks just getting into privacy.
Signal and session is just going to be easier to use and I'd rather they use session with slightly less metadata protection than nothing because they can't figure it out or it's just too difficult for them.

I understand what the developers are saying. They are saying that the free relays are needed for new users.
In order for Nostr to grow you need free relays because if you don't. Then users don't want to spend time researching how to pay for a relay especially if they don't have a lightning address.
In a way it makes a bit of sense.
We can just tell users to move onto paid relays once they are comfortable on Nostr. It doesn't affect me too much. It's the free relays administrators that have to put up with that nonsense. Let them take the pain. zmy relay will continue to be paid. I don't like headaches.

I think this is where WoT comes in, as new users generally have some nexus of another user. They could inherit some of the PoW of people who follow them, and the PoW can be some background process that doesn't effect UX too much. The key is making the marginal cost of a new npub higher than spammers are willing to bear. If it costs $0.10 of compute per npub, spammers might make several but will give up when those are easily filtered out.

The preference would be that NO ONE has to see it, particularly for the worst types of unwanted notes.

Maybe. IMO those Intel agencies are quite active on nostr. Lots of influence ops here. I've suspected you, for example. Decided probably not.
There are other possibilities. A dev on nostr could want the platform to respond to real threats, and this may be a way to accelerate development. Perhaps a rethink of how we use relays is in order. Perhaps we need to develop on the "web of trust" idea, or move to an authentication standard. Doesn't it seem like the spam attacks have grown incrementally in annoyingness? Like someone is trying to get a response, and might be a little exasperated by us not hitting the solution they want. Idk. I see patterns.

The first week was a little scary. I've been lucky enough to score some good paying gig work to keep this rolling for now. I don't think I'd survive off off bracelets, art, and produce just yet. I've reluctantly turned down some job offers in hopes of one particular opportunity working out in the future, so I'm really hoping I can keep going like this, until that comes to fruition. We have the tools with proof of work to mitigate the worst of spam. There is already a NIP to add PoW to notes, but that makes UX for normal use quite degraded. But what if we only had to do it occasionally? Let's say my profile contains a reference to a note on which I included PoW. Clients then could filter out users by which have shown a certain level of PoW, which if set high enough would make these spam attacks unfeasible.

It is. The whole idea is to connect to or operate relays that align with your preferences. The things that make nostr censorship resistant also enable tight censorship on a small scale with the option to opt out. It's about keeping the exits open. That point is lost when relays are hidden and keys are obscured away, though. Trying to dumb it down rather than leaning into unique possibilities, I believe, is hurting more than helping. People are dealing with these things they need but don't understand and are told they don't need to think about them until they do, which is usually when something bad is happening. They could instead be exploring fun options and learning how to manage those bad situations in the process. There's just very few ways to interact on the protocol like that right now, because who wants to build half a bridge and hope someone else will build the other half? That would be terribly frustrating.

I keep seeing these ultra-privacy-obsessed Bitcoiners talking about how to hide the fact that you even own Bitcoin. Avoid KYC / AML, don't file taxes, use CoinJoin, wear a mask, whatever. And of course, this stuff usually comes from slightly autistic nerds who get the tech but have zero grasp of the real world.
Most of them are planning to eventually cash out their stash, buy a house, a dream car, or something like that. But the moment you do that, the government is all over you. Owning a car or a house means full KYC. And the tax office will want to know where the money came from, especially since you’ve been flying under the radar for years with no filings, hiding behind your little privacy setups. That’s assuming the banking system hasn’t already flagged you before that.
So decades of hiding, wasted. Or maybe you were an idealist and just wanted to pass on 'generational wealth'. Congrats, you just handed your heirs a pile of problems when they actually try to use that money. Well done, genius. Thought you were so clever.
And you couldn’t care less about actively building a circular economy either. Decades go by and the only Sats you ever spend are for a coffee or some Nostr post or whatever. Sure, some Sats trickle into developing countries, but don’t worry, they’ll wake up soon too. Who told you freedom can be hacked instead of fought for? So? What are you fighting for right now, where’s your battle? That's something, Bitcoin can't fix for you. You have to do it yourself.
Grow up. The fiat system isn’t going anywhere. So how are you going to buy anything big with your Bitcoin? How are you going to pass it on without dumping the mess on someone else? Like the saying goes, stack Sats and stay humble. Stay humble! Stop going around bragging about how you’re outsmarting the system just to get a few likes. You’re not solving anything. You’re just pushing the problems down the road. That’s a classic fiat mindset. Haven’t you learned anything from Bitcoin?
Be grateful that your work and buying power are preserved and that's it.
