That's an interesting idea. It's effectively an attempt to create a distinction between legitimate identities and potential spammers by adding a "cost" to creating an identity, yet without the need for a centralized authority.
However, I don't know how effective it would be. The PoW would have to be high enough that it imposes a significant cost for spammers to have to spin up a new identity once the one they were using is no longer being seen by most users. Yet, that also means it will be a considerable wait for a new user on standard hardware to generate enough PoW to finally be able to post.
Indeed, a spammer could have his GPU working overnight to have multiple Nostr keys ready to go, so that as one is detected as a spammer, he just uses the next one in line, with the PoW note already having been generated.
I think the cost to the new user would be greater than the imposition caused to a determined spammer. Indeed, the more I look at PoW as a possible spam deterrent, the less it makes sense and really just ends up being a deterrent against new users in general. For it to be effective at deterring spam, it needs to be a high enough amount of PoW that it is an annoyance to average users, too. Especially those posting from mobile devices.

Helpful, and that is a form of what Amethyst does. However, it requires a number of people within a user's community to see and report the spam before it will be hidden. Not ideal.
The preference would be that NO ONE has to see it, particularly for the worst types of unwanted notes.

I bet you understand more than you give yourself credit for. You likely know that your identity is your key-pair, that notes are stored on relays, that you can read from and write to more than one relay at a time, and that clients are the apps you use to view notes that were created by others, interact with them, and create your own notes that then get saved to your chosen relays.
That's the basic plumbing of Nostr, right?
I think the idea is theoretically possible, but it would require both clients and relays to be developed that support pay-per-reply, and would likely need to use eCash, which means Nostr clients would likely need to all support NIP-60. That's probably the direction things are going, but it may take a bit to get there.

Why does spam exist?
It only exists because the following three things are true:
1. People with malicious intent exist.
2. People can create new Nostr identities for free.
3. New identities can write to relays for free with the expectation that their notes will be seen and may not be removed for a time.
It is not possible to change 1, and 2 cannot be changed without a central authority that issues "approved" Nostr keys. Not a road we want to go down.
That means the only way to fight spam is by improving the ability of relays to block spam from being written to them in the first place and/or recognize and remove it quickly.
It is then the responsibility of users to only read from relays that do so. This means they need to have a place to find such relays. A relay marketplace, of sorts, that they can be referred to or that can be displayed within their Nostr client.
Clients aren't entirely off the hook here either. Defaults matter, and clients should have sensible default relays for new users that haven't built a relay list of their own yet. But they can only do so when there are solid relay options that allow write access to new users while also effectively recognizing and removing spam.
Clients can also provide tools for mitigating spam that do not rely on relays doing so, such as the way Coracle, Damus, and Nostur can filter posts based on WoT, regardless of what relays they use. Likewise, Amethyst has a toggle to hide posts that have been reported by those you follow. With these types of tools, though, your experience will vary widely from client to client, based on whether they implement similar tools and whether they toggle them on by default.
Meanwhile, picking good relays will affect your experience on all clients. Well... at least the ones that respect your relay choices...

I absolutely understand how confusing the whole relay setup can be.
Writing to multiple relays is for the purpose of redundancy and censorship resistance. There is nothing that says you need to read from multiple relays, though. If you have one relay that shows you all the notes you want to see, then there's no need to read from more than that.
It's also not just paid relays that are an option for reading from that spammers are not likely to have write access. Web-of-trust relays are also a good option.

Yes, more integrity for the media for sure, since the hash of the data can be checked against the file name to ensure they still match. Redundancy of the media is dependent on it being mirrored to other Blossom servers, though. Currently Amethyst doesn't support mirroring your uploads to multiple Blossom servers. I am hoping that will be coming in a future update, as other Nostr clients HAVE added that feature.

Blossom is a protocol, just like Nostr, but built for hosting media files instead of text notes.
Instead of those files having a traditional file name, the file name is a hash of its content. This means the same file can ve stored on more than one server and if the original server is down, it can easily be located on other servers, because the hash will be the same.
It also means that the file's content can be hashed and checked against the file name to ensure the data hasn't been changed since it was originally updated. No one can pull a fast one by replacing your photo from the Grand Canyon with a gif of Rick Astley.

If you use Nostr.Build, I would recommend using their Blossom upload option, https://blossom.band
Anything you upload there will go to your Nostr.Build account, but it will also have the benefit of being content addressable, so it can still be found on any other Blossom server it is mirrored to, in case Nostr.Band is ever down.

Acredito que sim. Eu tenho medo do Nostr ser banido da loja de aplicativo e até mesmo o APK não funcionar. Google pode bloquear a instalação de alguma forma. Somente em aplicações no computador via web ou Linux pode vim a funcionar mas infelizmente não tem #Amethyst nas lojas de aplicativos do Linux.

Safety is a pretty subjective thing. I suspect a lot of this will be solved by combinations of client features and relays over time. Meaning there will probably be age appropriate combinations at some point. Or whatever measure you want to use. Of course, a relay specifically for children (for example) will likely have to deal with attracting certain types of adults. It'll be a constant battle.

How do you onboard new users into WoT? New users won't be in WoT initially which still means their on-boarding experience is tarnished by spam. Paid relays help, but then that is still expecting new users to finely tune relay lists and pay for relay services to start with.
Sometimes freedom of content like this just requires the user to go through some hoops to see only the content they wish to see.

i had to help a neighbour get on a 7am zoom call yesterday and - having checked, updated, and dismissed dozens of non-stop malicious warnings, pop-ups, and ads to get their computer ready the night before, we had to basically do it all over again at 6:45am for it to be usable at 7am
they're non-techy but... they are competent, and they literally could not have navigated this minefield of things NOT to click on without me. any one of the popups incorrectly dismissed could have derailed them and made them late to their call.
windows 11 is absolutely poison.

Personal responsibility always comes along with freedom, decentralized protocol or no.
It's also why making things convenient and easy, relieving users of personal responsibility, results in the tradeoff of less freedom.
