尝试创作拿破仑传记失败后，库布里克选择了改编萨克雷的《巴里·林登》。网络间流传的1969年9月版《巴里·林登》草拟剧本中，充满着关于军队列阵、荣誉准则等的描绘满载对启蒙运动思想的钦慕，一如拿破仑本人的态度；雷蒙德·巴里的故事与拿破仑波澜恢弘的人生历程在内核上也殊途同归。
拿破仑从小小的科西嘉岛贵族崛起为欧洲的战火之源，不过是巴里故事的宏大版；他粉碎等级阶层的传说也启发了后来反英雄角色的创作，如司汤达《红与黑》(Le Rouge et le Noir 1830)中的主角于连。这样看来，在预算限制和竞争作品带来的压力下，库布里克放弃独裁者拿破仑，转而投向四处漂泊的机会主义者巴里的怀抱也就不足为奇了。
库布里克奏起这场盛大的“泛欧洲怀疑论”华尔兹时，正值英国、爱尔兰、丹麦致力扩大欧洲经济共同体的70年代初。微妙的时间点不禁让人对库布里克本人的政治观点好奇。尽管巴里时刻准备着易帜，认定巴里是英国退欧支持者的雏形可能还是过于武断。但在他将自己伪装起来步入一个个金碧堂皇的居室时，背后支撑他的，的确是某种欧洲怀疑论，换言之，是对所谓欧洲作为一个整体的清醒认识。巴里难以抑制的思乡之情和爱尔兰同胞之义促使他将忠诚给予巴利巴里骑士，这动人心弦的一幕是他在影片中为数不多的真情流露。
诚然，我们不能草率地给《巴里·林登》盖上政治倾向，但至少库布里克已经深入探讨了欧洲人的身份认同和归属感问题。导演的大胆甚至给他带来了麻烦。在爱尔兰摄制期间，剧组的发型师受到爆炸恐吓，库布里克不得不在霍利黑德(Holyhead) 的酒店暂避风头。爆炸有可能只是恶作剧，但据某些推测，爱尔兰共和军对此影片的制作颇为不满。

Bought a bit of classic American pharmacy stuff. Overpaid about twice what it's actually worth. Originally it was just ethyl alcohol with oils — now it’s denatured alcohol with dyes and artificial fragrance.
Ближайший их конкурент на российском рынке — это какой-нибудь лосьон «О’жен» или «Кузнецкий мост», может быть даже «Огуречный» или «Саша». Pinaud Clubman становится «дорого-богато» лишь преодолев границу. Если это понимать, то особых претензий к Whiskey Woods быть не может.
