Don't let the bad actors trick you into thinking Bitcoin Core 30 allows you to re-enable the datacarrier limit:
1) Along with unlimiting the default, they also broke it further. datacarriersize=83 now (as of Core 30) allows for 83 outputs totalling 830 bytes of spam, instead of just 92 bytes of spam (9 bytes of which couldn't be arbitrary) as in Core 29 and earlier.
2) datacarriersize is marked as deprecated, and explicitly planned to be removed in a future release (likely silently, since "it's already deprecated").
3) Core never fixed the Inscription exploits (CVE-2023-50428 and CVE-2024-34149) which allow spammers to bypass the datacarriersize limit.
The only way forward now is a mass migration to Knots. Not the way I wanted things to go, but Core has given us no other choice. Once this is resolved, we should avoid putting all our eggs in one basket, and encourage the creation and use of multiple clients.

Spent the weekend + even Monday at 3 different weddings in the north east of England.

Levensgrote beeltenis van Stalin terug in de Moskouse metro
Voor het eerst in meer dan zestig jaar is in Moskou weer een meer dan levensgrote beeltenis van Sovjetdictator Jozef Stalin te zien. Niet alle Moskovieten zijn daar even blij mee. De man die verantwoordelijk is voor de dood van miljoenen landgenoten is in Rusland bezig met een comeback, met instemming van de overheid.
In de jaren na zijn dood in 1953 werd in de Sovjetunie de herinnering aan Stalin stelselmatig uit het straatbeeld verbannen. Onder de 'destalinisatie', ingezet door de nieuwe leider Nikita Chroesjtsjov, toonden de Sovjetautoriteiten hun afschuw over de terreur die Stalin had ontketend. Miljoenen gevangenen keerden in die jaren terug uit de kampen van de Goelag.
Beeldengroep permanent bewaakt
Begin jaren 60 waren er bijna geen monumenten meer over die nog aan hem herinnerden. In 1966 werd een beeldengroep op het metrostation onder het Moskouse Tagankaplein definitief verwijderd, waarvan Stalin deel had uitgemaakt. Zijn beeld was tegen die tijd al weggehaald.
Vorige maand is een kopie van dit reliëf teruggeplaatst in de metro, met een drie meter hoge Stalin pontificaal in het midden. Meteen na de onthulling trok de beeltenis de belangstelling van honderden verbaasde metroreizigers. Velen maakten foto's of lieten zich fotograferen, met Stalin op de achtergrond. Sommigen, vaak leden van de Communistische Partij, legden bloemen.
Er was ook protest. Tegenstanders van Stalins terugkeer in de publieke ruimte lieten pamfletten achter met oude citaten van president Vladimir Poetin en oud-president Dmitri Medvedev, waarin zij kritiek leveren op Stalin. De teksten werden snel weggehaald en sindsdien wordt de beeldengroep permanent bewaakt. Twee mensen werden aangehouden voor de actie en kregen een boete van omgerekend ruim 200 euro.
Petitie gestart
Oppositiepartij Jabloko is een petitie gestart om te proberen het Moskouse stadsbestuur op andere gedachten te brengen en Stalin weer weg te krijgen uit de metro. Bijna 5000 mensen hebben de petitie getekend. Volgens Kirill Gontsjarov, vicevoorzitter van de Moskouse partijorganisatie, is de handtekeningenactie nodig om dit soort initiatieven in de kiem te smoren. "Als je hier nu geen aandacht aan besteedt, dan kunnen ze je straks gewoon arresteren en kunnen de methodes van Stalin in Rusland overal worden toegepast. Wij willen dat niet."
De kans op succes van de petitie is vrijwel nihil. Jabloko is niet vertegenwoordigd in het parlement of de Moskouse gemeenteraad en is in het huidige Rusland veroordeeld tot de marge van het politieke bedrijf.
Daarbij komt dat de populariteit van Stalin de laatste jaren snel toeneemt. Blijkens een peiling van het onafhankelijke Levada-centrum is meer dan 60 procent van de Russen positief over Stalin. Zij zien hem eerst en vooral als de grote overwinnaar in de Tweede Wereldoorlog, niet als de man die het lot van miljoenen landgenoten op zijn geweten heeft.
De afgelopen jaren zijn overal in Rusland al meer dan honderd Stalinbeeltenissen onthuld, niet altijd op prominente plaatsen, maar wel met instemming van de overheid. Tegelijkertijd worden in Rusland pogingen om de slachtoffers van Stalins terreur te herdenken steeds meer gedwarsboomd. De jaarlijkse bijeenkomsten waarbij hun namen worden voorgelezen, mogen niet doorgaan en gedenktekens worden weggehaald, vaak op last van de autoriteiten.
Activisten van het project 'Het laatste adres' weten er alles van. Het al meer dan tien jaar bestaande project is geïnspireerd door de 'Stolpersteine' die ook in Nederland te zien zijn. Eenvoudige metalen plaatjes worden bevestigd op de muur van het huis waar iemand woonde voordat die werd gearresteerd en vervolgens vermoord. Het idee is de omvang van de politieke terreur uit de Stalintijd aanschouwelijk te maken. Maar al enkele jaren worden die bordjes stelselmatig verwijderd, meestal door onbekenden in het holst van de nacht.
Miljoenen doden
De repressie onder het Stalinbewind heeft brede lagen van de bevolking geraakt. Alleen al in Moskou zijn in de jaren 30 van de vorige eeuw ongeveer 40.000 mensen gefusilleerd, landelijk bijna een miljoen. Tientallen miljoenen mensen belandden in de strafkampen, vermoedelijk enkele miljoenen zijn daar bezweken.
"Net als veel andere mensen in Rusland heb ik familieleden die zijn vervolgd onder Stalin", zegt Jevgenia, een jonge vrouw die op het partijkantoor van Jabloko haar handtekening komt zetten tegen het nieuwe Stalinmonument. "Daarom vind ik het niet prettig dat Stalinbeeld te zien. Ik vind dat de overheid geen tirannen moet verheerlijken en juist die historische gebeurtenissen en figuren moet veroordelen. En dus niet hun standbeelden neerzetten in de metro."
