China's Need For US Chemicals Greater Than US Need For Rare Earths
US petrochemical producers may have found themselves on the front line of global trade wars, BNEF reports, with China’s dependence on the US for feedstocks (see "https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/chinese-plastics-factories-face-mass-closure-us-ethane-disappears
") blunting the impact of its dominations of exports of rare earth metals.
China imported more than 565,000 barrels per day of petrochemical feedstocks from the US in 2024 according to the Energy Information Administration, with a value of over $4.7 billion. That dwarfed the $170 million of rare earths the US imported last year, about 70% of which came from China, according to the US Geological Survey.

The figures show the dependence the US and China have developed on each other by ever tightening trade links over the past few decades. While China has a tight grip on refining many metals crucial for industry, it also takes in niche chemicals from the US that are difficult to buy elsewhere.
China leans on naphtha to produce most base chemicals, which are processed further to end up in everyday items like electronics and clothing. However, some plants can switch to cheaper propane when the economics make sense, which they do regularly. Propane dehydrogenation plants however can’t process alternatives like naphtha. The US accounted for over half of all China’s propane imports in 2024.
US producers have looked to China to buy their ballooning volumes of feedstock, the market value of which has almost quadrupled since 2020. China accounts for almost half of all new mixed-feed ethylene and propylene production capacity set to come online globally over the next four years, based on data compiled by BloombergNEF.
A forced divorce
The honeymoon period may be about to end. Following the implementation of tariffs by President Donald Trump’s administration in April, China retaliated with its own on US imports — including a 125% tariff on feedstocks like propane and ethane. The duty effectively killed the economics of importing US feedstocks.
Alternative sources of propane may be hard or expensive to come by, with producers in the Middle East sending most of their supplies to India, South Korea and Japan. While some rerouting could take place, Middle Eastern players could use the lack of alternatives for China’s propane dehydrogenation plants to charge a premium. China’s propane dehydrogenation operators, like Hengli Petrochemical, have already suffered from weak margins over the past years. Many may opt to shut their operations temporarily.
A messy settlement
China moved quickly to remove tariffs on US ethane as trade talks commenced. However, while China seems willing to buy US ethane, the US administration may no longer allow it. Enterprise Products Partners — the largest US-based exporter of petrochemical feedstocks — received a notice on Wednesday from the Bureau of Industry and Security at the US Department of Commerce, denying licenses to export ethane to China on the basis that such flows “pose an unacceptable risk of use in or diversion to a ‘military end use’ in China.” Energy Transfer received a similar communication.
China’s ethane cracking capacity is dwarfed by its capacity to process naphtha and propane, but almost all of its ethane imports come from the US. The restrictions will have a significant impact on the Lianyungang and Tianjin plants, owned by Satellite Chemical, Sinopec and INEOS. SP Chemicals, a Singapore-based producer, sources most of its feedstock from Enterprise Products Partners.

Follower count is impossible to count with 100% accuracy, so it will always be different from client to client. It is best to consider it a loose approximation, rather than an actual count.
Why is this the case?
Well, you have to understand how Nostr clients are finding this information. They can find out how many npubs you follow pretty easily. They just need to find your most recent follow list (kind 3) and count how many npubs are listed there. Done.
However, this is not possible when trying to count how many people are following you. There is no single list to go find the most recent version of and count up the npubs who follow you. Instead, Nostr clients have to search as many relays as they can, asking for any and every user's follow list that includes your npub on it, remove any duplicates, and then count up those lists.
What if some relays they request the lists from are offline? That's highly likely to be the case. What if some of those relays send back an error? That's also highly likely to occur. What if there are relays with follow lists on them that the Nostr client never even reaches out to? This is almost certain to be the case. What if there are people "following" you, but they did not add you to their kind 3, and instead added you to an alternate follow list that can even be encrypted (kind 30000)? This is also becoming more and more likely.
All of these possibilities will combine to result in a follower count that is inaccurate, showing less followers than you actually have. What is more, there's not really anything that can be done about it. This is just one of the side-effects of using a protocol where the data isn't stored in a single, centralized server, but rather on thousands of relays, public and private, that each only have a portion of the data.
TLDR: Follower counts are always wrong, and they don't matter.

Using websocat to send a kind 1 REQ to the #Nosflare relay and then watching new events live streamed through the websocket connection is so pleasing. The new v7 update has been a huge success in placing this serverless relay implementation on par with the most widely used relay offerings. I literally have the legendary nostr:npub1qqqqqqyz0la2jjl752yv8h7wgs3v098mh9nztd4nr6gynaef6uqqt0n47m to thank for inspiration. I used his Nostream for my first relay a few years ago. It inspired me to ponder "how can I do this using Cloudflare workers", and it has been a wild journey ever since.

Quem antes só tinha a calçada como destino, ganhou reconhecimento e novos horizontes por meio de um projeto social de Campinas (SP) que oferece cursos gratuitos profissionalizantes para pessoas em situação de rua. A oportunidade garante a reinserção no mercado de trabalho e na sociedade.
🎓 Com uma beca e um sorriso no rosto, a 1ª turma foi presentada com uma cerimônia de formatura clássica na última sexta-feira (6). A ação é realizada pelo Instituto Há Esperança, uma ONG que dá abrigo e refeições para 200 pessoas por dia.

Cristiane Duarte da Silva se formou em confeitaria e informática. Após 20 anos vivendo nas ruas, esse é o primeiro passo para ela realizar o seu sonho: arrumar um emprego e sair da calçada.
"Meu sonho é ter uma vida digna", diz Cristiane.
Trilhando um novo caminho, a formanda conta que o curso a tem ajudado muito e as aulas tem lhe trazido aprendizados novos a cada dia.

Ida às ruas após tentativa de abuso
A formanda explica que foi parar nas ruas há muitos anos, após uma tentativa de abuso sexual de seu padrasto. Com o descrédito da mãe, ela só viu uma alternativa.
Vivendo nas calçadas, Cristiane enfrentou a fome, o medo e o frio. Também viu o preconceito e o descaso de perto. "Às vezes, tem uns que chegam a jogar até lixo na gente", relata.
Trilhando um novo caminho, a formanda conta que o curso a tem ajudado muito e as aulas tem lhe trazido aprendizados novos a cada dia. Com lágrimas nos olhos, ela comemora a conquista.
"É uma emoção. A gente faz o curso e acaba tendo um diploma. Nunca imaginei que isso poderia acontecer", finaliza.
Na cerimônia, as histórias se unem e o reconhecimento transborda em emoção.

Lázaro Candido, de 62 anos, nunca imaginou que vestiria uma beca. Agora formado como eletricista, ele só tinha estudado até a 4ª série.
"Minha vida vai mudar para melhor", diz Lázaro.

Jair Rosa também vestia a beca pela primeira vez, e nem imaginava que conquistaria esse feito. Após a formatura, Jair passa a correr atrás de dois novos sonhos: recuperar o vínculo familiar e ter a sua própria barbearia.
"Graças a Deus estou me formando e, em breve, estarei com a minha própria barbearia para cortar muito cabelo das pessoas de Campinas", diz.

"Os cursos profissionalizantes, além de capacitar para o mercado de trabalho, ele muda a autoestima de uma pessoa. É o resgate de uma cidadania. Muitos já tinham perdido isso", diz Robson Teixeira Gondin, fundador do Instituto Há Esperança.
Alunos descalços
Os cursos são voltados para alunos que frequentam o albergue do Instituto Há Esperança, no Jardim do Lago. Com duração de três meses, os alunos precisam ter 70% de presença para garantir o diploma.

Cássio Cristino, professor de confeitaria, explica que os estudantes aprendem a desenvolver vários pratos durante os estudos. Complementando as aulas teóricas, os alunos colocam a mão na massa.
"Eles aprendem a fazer o pão de ló, que é mais simples. Após assado, eles aprendem a fazer o bolo de aniversário [...]. Aprendem a fazer coisas mais simples, a confeitaria básica para não dificultar para eles", explica o docente.
Na barbearia, os alunos treinam as habilidades com os outros moradores de rua. E, em frente aos computadores, os estudantes aprendem a como redigir um texto e a como preparar um currículo.
Na oficina elétrica, os estudantes descobrem tudo que um eletricista precisa saber.
Antes de ficar desempregado e parar nas ruas, Julio Cesar trabalhava como pintor. Com os novos conhecimentos, ele espera uma recolocação no mercado de trabalho.
"Até na parte da pintura eu precisava saber da parte elétrica e não sabia. Agora eu vou sem medo", diz.

🧶 New version of flotilla.social is out! And yes, I am still vainly trying to fight the vibe, however I've given up fighting NIP 29. This release drops support for "Unmanaged" rooms, moving messages to one big chat room, or (depending on relay implementation) to proper NIP 29 rooms.
Also included are several UX improvements, and probably some regressions. See below for details:
