Angst in Atlanta: 'Iedereen kan gearresteerd worden'
In heel Amerika houdt immigratiedienst ICE de gemoederen bezig. Zo ook in Atlanta. Protesten als in Los Angeles zijn er niet. Maar ook hier wordt geprotesteerd, tegen de voorgenomen uitbreiding van 's lands grootste ICE-detentiecentrum. De angst regeert.
"Ik weet niet hoe lang de agenten van ICE dit nog gaan volhouden, maar ik weet zeker dat ze uitgeput zijn hier in Georgia", zegt actievoerder Mario Guevara.
Hij kan het weten. Elk dag staat hij rond het ochtendgloren paraat om de acties van de Amerikaanse immigratiepolitie in de regio vast te leggen. Gewapend met een dashcam, twee smartphones en een camera scheurt hij door de straten. Zijn bevindingen deelt hij met zijn honderdduizenden volgers, veelal mensen met Latijns-Amerikaanse wortels.
Waarschuwingen gepost
"Sommige mensen zeggen tegen me: 'Elke ochtend is het eerste wat ik doe Facebook of Instagram openen om te kijken wat Mario heeft gepost'. Zo weten ze waar de ICE-operaties zijn. Elke dag." Tips krijgt hij van diezelfde volgers: de stroom aan berichten is haast niet bij te benen.
Vaak is het loos alarm: in de meeste gevallen gaat het om reguliere politieoperaties. "Maar het is begrijpelijk dat mensen bezorgd zijn", zegt een sheriff in het nabijgelegen Lawrenceville, waar eerder die dag iemand blijkt te zijn neergeschoten. "Bedankt, ik moest het toch even checken", lacht Guevara.
Een Amerikaans paspoort heeft hij niet. Maar voor Guevara is dat geen belemmering. "Ik weet dat ik risico loop", zegt hij. "Ik ben geen Amerikaans staatsburger, mijn moeder zegt dat ze elke dag voor me bidt." Dan, serieuzer: "Maar ik ben niet bang, ik doe gewoon mijn werk en krijg veel steun van de gemeenschap."
Hij is wel wat gewend. Als journalist werkte hij eerder in zijn geboorteland El Salvador. Maar veilig was dat niet meer, vertelt hij. Tijdens een protest werd hij bekogeld met stenen. "Uit veiligheidsoverwegingen ben ik toen naar Amerika vertrokken, ruim twintig jaar geleden."
Elke dag
Jarenlang al doet hij vanuit Atlanta verslag van de acties van ICE. Eerst onder Obama, daarna onder Trump en Biden, en nu weer onder Trump. "Onder Biden was het misschien een keer per maand. Sinds Trump de macht weer heeft, gebeurt het praktisch elke dag", zegt hij over de ICE-operaties die de migrantengemeenschap in hun greep houden.
Veel migranten, zonder en mét de juiste papieren, aarzelen of ze nog veilig naar buiten kunnen. "Dat is een van de grootste problemen waar we nu mee kampen", zegt Emilia Ismael-Simental van het El Centro Hispano in North Carolina. "De tegenstrijdigheden tussen wat de wet voorschrijft en hoe beleid wordt uitgevoerd."
Amerikaanse media reppen op basis van bronnen rond Trump over een doel van één miljoen uitzettingen per jaar. Dat wordt bij lange na niet gehaald: tot nu toe zijn het er enkele tienduizenden. Onvoldoende, vindt Trump. Volgens nieuwszender NBC is ICE nu bezig 5.000 nieuwe agenten aan te nemen, om de cijfers op te krikken. Er wordt naarstig gezocht naar meer ruimte, in bestaande en in nieuwe detentiecentra.
Risico's afwegen
"En dus wegen mensen af welke risico's ze willen nemen", zegt Ismael-Simental. Naar school of naar hun werk gaan de meesten met een migratieachtergrond nog wel.
Maar in buurten waar burgerjournalist Guevara komt, is de angst voelbaar. Als de schoolbus komt aanrijden, blijven ouders binnen om van achter de gordijnen te kijken of hun kroost veilig thuiskomt.
Guevara weet dat die angst reëel is. De telefoon gaat. Het is Tania, een volger, wier zoon hier eerder legaal binnenkwam op een programma van Biden, dat door Trump is teruggedraaid. "Hij heeft een deportatiebevel binnengekregen, en overweegt zichzelf nu te deporteren om de familie te redden", vertelt ze snikkend aan de telefoon.
"Heb ik nog niet vaak gehoord", zegt Guevara. "In principe gaat ICE op zoek naar een specifiek persoon, maar als ze die met anderen aantreffen, zullen ze die vaak ook arresteren. Iedereen kan dus in principe gearresteerd worden", vertelt hij. "Omdat vrijwel niemand maanden in de gevangenis wil ondertekenen ze dan het deportatiebevel vaak zelf."
Vandaag houdt ICE zich rustig in de voorsteden van Atlanta. In een van de buurtschappen zijn ze al binnen enkele minuten vertrokken. "Misschien geen goede dag voor mij als journalist, wel een goede dag voor mijn gemeenschap", zegt Guevara.

It's been challenging, but equally if not more refreshing. I don't have my co-workers in my ears all day discussing politics, economics, subjects that they, and myself know nearly amything about.
I try to spend this time focusing purely on positive growth, improved and healtheir habits, eating in peace and calmly instead of rushed, maybe even some classical music or something to keep me focused / clear headed...
Pay the bills and save in bitcoin. I don't ask much. 🙌

Validity of the security of something comes with time, no? MD5 was secure until it wasn't. What we do know is that current algorithms in use will come under attack from quantum computing at some point. So it makes sense to seek/research alternatives against that threat. Perhaps the "post-quantum" or "quantum-resistant" name is the snake oily part, but ultimately it is a worthwhile endeavor none-the-less. Whether any of the crop of "post-quantum" algos stand the test of time is simply a matter of time...
