I tried to open an inbound channel like you said but it said I had no sats to pay for it. So I sent 11k sats to the wallet and it ate 10k. Then I sent 98k sats over, and it ate 10k sats. The other custodial wallet didn’t charge a single sat in fees.

i haven't tried but i think their docker image or compose normally comes with bitcoin core built-in. so you would wanna manually create your docker compose and not include the core image. and instead you tell it to connect another node remotely using rpc. i think you can give host/user/pass via env or cli args.
not sure never tried.
since knots is a fork of core it should just work.
basically what you wanna search for is instead of running another node in the compose make it use already an existing node.
you don't have to specifically search for knots.

since pure non-custodial lightning wallets are hard, i think it would be ideal to just keep it as simple as possible:
custodial for small amounts, large chunks of sats over the custodial limit are automatically sent to the users non-custodial onchain wallet at regular intervals. No limits between these periods. This is a requirement to reduce liability on our end.
Our wallet doesn’t need to be hardcore non-custodial at every level (which isn’t really even possible). it will mainly be the touch point for people getting into bitcoin.
Getting their first sats from our lightning node into their non-custodial onchain wallet will be huge for people new to bitcoin and for non-custodial bitcoin as a whole.

Instead of writing retarded letters to retarded devs - some of whom allegedly don’t even run their own full nodes - you’d better start appealing to pleb node runners if you hope to follow through with your proposal. A few pieces of advice for your next letter, if you aim for it to be less retarded:
1. Read the room when you post it. Given the fuckery of shitcoin Core, maybe now’s not the best time.
2. Calling Bitcoin a “scarce, censorship-resistant store of value” instead of “money” implies one of two things: you’re either economically illiterate or a bad actor pushing a narrative.
3. Acting arrogant by dismissing non-technical plebs from the conversation will make it even harder to gather consensus for your upgrade.

In retrospect, it was obvious the letter they signed was justification to merge a clearly controversial PR. It's not obvious what the second and third order effects will be, but I guarantee this will not play out the way that the signers of the letter think it will.
Happy to eat my words and say that I was wrong if a year from now if there isn't a significant growth (>100%) in large OP_RETURN outputs (>160 bytes).
I challenge any signer of the letter to provide a similar metric to measure whether what they're doing works and under what conditions they'd be willing to admit they were wrong.
