El primer hombre capaz de noquear a Mike Tyson y la historia del mayor batacazo en la historia del boxeo.
Con la década del 90 estrenándose, en el mundo del https://bolavip.com/ar/tema/boxeo
había ganado las 37 peleas que había realizado desde su estreno profesional, 33 de ellas por demolición, y era dueño de los cinturones del CMB, la FIB y The Ring. Generaba y ganaba millones de dólares, estaba en la portada de todas las revistas, en los Estados Unidos y mucho más allá también. Todos estaban pendientes de sus peleas, que tantas veces terminaban antes que los espectadores se terminaran de acomodar.
En febrero de 1990, en Japón hicieron un gran desembolso de dinero para llevar a Mike Tyson a pelear a Tokio, sacándolo por primera vez de Estados Unidos. Seis millones de dólares invertidos solo en llevar al campeón mundial y verlo destruir a su oponente. Don King, el polémico mánager que lo acompañó durante más de una década, no quiso arriesgar. Para dar el gusto a los fanáticos nipones, eligió a James Douglas, un peleador sin gran historial, que ya había mordido el polvo en cuatro peleas, siendo noqueado en dos de ellas, y al que se lo veía algo excedido de peso.
La prensa estadounidense no tardó en presentarlo como un “paquete” para ser críticos del manejo que se estaba dando a la carrera del campeón. Las apuestas estaban 42-1 y nadie preveía un desenlace que no fuera el nocaut de Iron Mike. Nada más era cuestión de adivinar en qué asalto llegaría. “Solo mi madre creía en mí”, recordó Douglas en una entrevista que concedió cuando se cumplieron 25 años del que sigue siendo el más grande batacazo en la historia del boxeo.
El día anterior a la pelea, para colmo, Buster, como lo apodaban, contrajo una fuerte gripe que no había desaparecido, aunque sí mermado, para la noche siguiente. Su madre, su mayor seguidora, había muerto tres semanas atrás y a su mujer le habían detectado una severa enfermedad en el hígado. Cuando arribó a la última conferencia de prensa, después que hablara Tyson, más de la mitad de la sala se levantó y se fue. “¿Usted es Buster Douglas, no?”, relatan que le consultó una de los periodistas que había permanecido en la sala. Podía desmoronarse, tomar el dinero que tenía asegurado por subir al ring y dejar que sucediera lo que el mundo quería ver. O podía hacer de todo su mayor fortaleza y salir a domar a la fiera.
“Esta pelea está terminada antes de empezar. A lo sumo terminará unos pocos segundos después”, fueron las palabras del reconocido comentarista Larry Merchant cuando el retador subía al ring. Pero la sorpresa comenzó a dominar el ambiente desde un primer asalto en el que lejos de intentar escapar comenzó a intercambiar golpes con Mike Tyson. Sin la técnica ni la estrategia de los grandes campeones. Con el corazón por delante. El campeón, además, parecía algo más limitado en sus movimientos que en sus combates anteriores, como si no hubiese llegado a Tokio con la mejor preparación. Y los asaltos comenzaron a sucederse con Douglas de pie, plantado.
Para el octavo asalto, Buster había logrado inflamar tanto un ojo de Iron Mike que al campeón se le había reducido considerablemente el campo de visión. Se envalentonó y lo fue a buscar contra las cuerdas, donde estuvo a punto de perderlo todo. “Yo estaba como admirando mi trabajo. Lo observaba a él. Me daba tiempo para mirar todo lo que ocurría, y presté más atención a sus reacciones que a seguir peleando. Pero él terminó conectándome un buen golpe”, recordó Douglas sobre el upper de derecha que le hizo despegar los dos pies del suelo antes de arrojarlo a la lona.
Pero el retador no solo se levantó durante la cuenta de protección, algo más lenta de lo habitual, sino que para el décimo asalto aprovechó el cansancio de Tyson y lo recibió con una combinación que le aflojó las piernas. No tardó en detectarlo y se le fue encima soltando todo tipo de golpes, sin estilo, desprolijos, pero tantos que varios de ellos llegaron a humanidad de un campeón aturdido que de golpe cayó de espaldas sobre la lona. La cuenta fue todavía más lenta que la anterior y le dio la oportunidad de gatear por el ring intentando encontrar la fuerza de piernas necesarias para ponerse de pie. El intento solo lo hizo caer en brazos del árbitro, que lo recibió haciendo el gesto de que la pelea estaba terminada.
¿Cómo siguió la carrera de Buster Douglas?
La victoria ante Mike Tyson le permitió a James Buster Douglas coronarse campeón mundial de peso pesado del CMB y la FIB, pero solo mantuvo ese status por algunos meses. En octubre de ese mismo año protagonizó ante Evander Holyfield, en Las Vegas, el combate que el mundo esperaba para Tyson y se fue noqueado en el tercer asalto.
Solo perdería una vez más antes del retiro, ante Lou Savarese en 1998, pero los combates en los que se vio involucrado tras ese año en que enfrentó a los dos más grandes de la época estuvieron lejos de generar interés. El retiro, al que dio lugar en febrero de 1999, no lo alejó del boxeo. Se instaló en una comunidad agrícola, a las afueras de Columbus, y siguió entrenando a jóvenes deseosos de trascender en el deporte. Perdió la fortuna que casi no llegó a disfrutar. Por eso cuando lo recuerda, no la extraña.

🚨 Fake Ledger Live App Discovered Targeting MacOS Users🚨
MacOS users of Ledger hardware wallets are targeted by sophisticated phishing campaigns using fake Ledger Live apps that steal users' 24-word recovery phrases, allowing cybercriminals to drain digital assets like bitcoin. The malware, such as Atomic macOS Stealer and Odyssey, silently replaces the legitimate app with a malicious version that mimics its appearance and prompts users to enter their recovery phrase under false pretenses, like "suspicious activity" or "critical error" alerts. These attacks, active since at least August 2024, originate from over 2,800 hacked websites and have evolved to directly harvest recovery phrases, with additional scams via compromised Discord accounts, Reddit phishing, and fake physical mail. To stay safe, users must never enter their seed phrase on a computer or website, only on the hardware wallet itself, and should purchase wallets from official sources.

Pomme purée is basically fancy word for super silky mashed potatoes 🤣 I mashed it roughly then press through the strainer. Put it back on low heat, add cream, butter and seasoning with salt and pepper. It’s quite a work but totally worth it!
