硬めの長編小説を読破したのは十数年ぶりやもしれない。文学に蒙い私がこんな評論めいたことを公開の場でするのは気が引けるのだが、超一流の人間観察というのはこれほど徹底したものなのかと驚いた。こういう驚きは社会学のゴフマンの断片を読んで以来である。私はもともと小説というものが苦手で読まないのだが、今回はその分析と叙述との凄みに圧倒されてしまい、500頁に垂んとする本文を一気呵成に読まされた。作中のジョゼフ・グランの言葉を借りればすっかり「脱帽！」の心地である。
「ただ、世間はそいつに病名をつける勇気がなかったのさ、即座にはね。世論というやつは、神聖なんだ――冷静を失うな、何よりもまず冷静を失うな、さ。」(p. 53)
「（……）天災というものは、事実、ざらにあることであるが、しかし、そいつがこっちの頭上に降りかかってきたときは、容易に天災とは信じられない。この世には、戦争と同じくらいの数のペストがあった。しかも、ペストや戦争がやってきたとき、人々はいつも同じくらい無用意な状態にあった。（……）戦争が勃発すると、人々はいう――『こいつは長くは続かないだろう、あまりにもばかげたことだから』そしていかにも、戦争というものは確かにあまりにもばかげたことであるが、しかしそのことは、そいつが長続きする妨げにはならない。愚行は常にしつこく続けられるものであり、人々もしょっちゅう自分のことばかり考えてさえいなければ、そのことに気が付くはずである。（……）別のいいかたをすれば、彼らは人間中心主義者〔ルビ：ヒューマニスト〕であった。つまり、天災などというものを信じなかったのである。天災というものは人間の尺度とは一致しない、したがって天災は非現実的なもの、やがて過ぎ去る悪夢だと考えられる。ところが、天災は必ずしも過ぎ去らないし、悪夢から悪夢へ、人間のほうが過ぎ去って行くことになり、それも人間中心主義者〔ルビ：ヒューマニスト〕たちがまず第一にということになるのは、彼らは自分で用心というものをしなかったからである。（……）ペストという、未来も、移動も、議論も封じてしまうものなど、どうして考えられたであろうか。彼らは自ら自由であると信じていたし、しかも、天災というものがあるかぎり、何びとも決して自由ではありえないのである。」(pp.55-56)

「世間に存在する悪は、ほとんど常に無知に由来するものであり、善き意志も、豊かな知識がなければ、悪意と同じくらい多くの被害を与えることがありうる。人間は邪悪であるよりもむしろ善良であり、そして真実のところ、そのことは問題ではない。しかし、彼らは多少とも無知であり、そしてそれがすなわち美徳あるいは悪徳と呼ばれるところのものなのであって、最も救いのない悪徳とは、自らすべてを知っていると信じ、そこで自ら人を殺す権利を認めるような無知の、悪徳にほかならぬのである。殺人者の魂は盲目なのであり、ありうるかぎりの明識なくしては、真の善良さも美しい愛も存在しない。」(p.193)
