Assistent Nol de Ruiter was erbij in 1988 én 1990 en deed daar later boekjes over open
Met Nol de Ruiter overleed niet zomaar een assistent van het Nederlands elftal. De gisternacht overleden oud-assistent bij Oranje maakte op het EK van 1988 het grootste succes mee en was twee jaar later present op het mislukte WK van 1990.
Onderdeel van geschiedschrijving was hij en letterlijk deed hij zelfs aan geschiedschrijving. De Ruiter hield zijn ervaringen namelijk zorgvuldig bij en schroomde niet die notities later te openbaren, met de nodige ophef tot gevolg.
Over Rinus Michels en het plan van 1988
Aan de zijde van de legendarische Rinus Michels (overleden op 3 maart 2005) ging De Ruiter in de zomer van 1988 mee naar het EK in West-Duitsland. Het werd een groot succesverhaal, met de enige hoofdprijs in de geschiedenis van het Nederlands elftal als resultaat.
In het kader van een uitzending van Andere Tijden Sport van vier jaar geleden pakte De Ruiter thuis in Loosdrecht zijn map van 1988 uit de kast. Het was een ordner vol geheimen, met informatie, brieven, observaties, afspraken, tactiek en zelfs quotes van bondscoach Michels.
Kijk hieronder naar de betreffende uitzending van Andere Tijden Sport (de map van '88):
"Ik heb iedere avond even zitten schijven, sigaartje aan, wijntje erbij en huppakee", zei De Ruiter. De map begon met de uitnodiging aan de spelers voor het toernooi. Niet onbelangrijk was de toevoeging op het einde: "Vergeet je paspoort niet."
De Ruiter was door Michels verantwoordelijk gemaakt voor de standaardsituaties. Na de verloren eerste EK-wedstrijd tegen de Sovjet-Unie (1-0) schreef De Ruiter te twijfelen over de vrije trappen van aanvoerder Ruud Gullit: "Hij schoot er twee hoog over."
Ronald Koeman mocht de volgende nemen. Een ingestudeerde hoekschop werkte wonderwel in de tweede wedstrijd tegen Engeland (3-1 winst). Erwin Koeman bracht de bal (volgens De Ruiter "een dooie bal") voor, Wim Kieft kopte door en Marco van Basten maakte zijn derde goal van de wedstrijd.
Uit de map van De Ruiter bleek ook dat Michels een "opportunistische" speelstijl verkoos boven het "eeuwige" balbezit. De architect van het totaalvoetbal van 1974 wilde dat de bal sneller en vaker naar voren werd gespeeld.
Oud-international Jan Wouters reageerde gisteren in Langs de Lijn En Omstreken op het overlijden van Nol de Ruiter:
Het was de tactiek in de halve finale tegen Duitsland. "Duitsland moet het werk doen", schreef De Ruiter toen. "Het positiespel is van hun niet zo goed. We moeten opportuniteit hebben, niet verliefd zijn op ons positiespel."
Het positiespel was slechts een middel om "Marco te vinden. Of Ruud, of wie dan ook die diepgaat", zo citeerde De Ruiter destijds de woorden van Michels. De Ruiter voegde daaraan toe dat: "Zij ten koste van alles willen winnen. Dat hebben wij eigenlijk niet."
Oranje overwon wel op 21 mei in Hamburg en overwon op het hele EK. Weer citeerde De Ruiter bondscoach Michels: "Vergelijk met 1974. Deze ploeg is beter. Vooral het moraal."
Over Leo Beenhakker en de ramp van 1990
Twee jaar na het succesvolle EK ging De Ruiter als assistent van Leo Beenhakker naar het WK van 1990 in Italië. Een heel ander verhaal. Daar leverde Oranje ondanks dezelfde sterren als in 1988 een wanprestatie op een toernooi dat bol stond van intriges en incidenten in het Nederlandse kamp.
De vorige maand overleden Beenhakker nam de grootste geheimen van 1990 naar eigen zeggen zijn graf in, maar Nol de Ruiter deed wel een boekje open over het WK in het door Martin Donker geschreven boek NOL uit 2010.
De teksten uit het dagboek van De Ruiter logen er niet om. Hij verhaalde over gebrek aan discipline, gebrek aan fatsoen, vrouwen in het hotel. Bovendien moest bondscoach Beenhakker het zwaar ontgelden.
"Leo kan ontzettend goed toneelspelen", schreef De Ruiter in zijn dagboek. "Maar de besprekingen hebben totaal geen inhoud, de trainingen zijn niet voorbereid en stellen niets voor. De organisatie is slecht."
En De Ruiter ging verder: "Leo is echt super publiciteitsgeil. Hij had zogenaamd afgerekend met de mythe Michels. Met veel komedie speelde hij dit. Iedereen moest gemotiveerd zijn. Het blijft allemaal toneelspel, ik vind Leo echt een grote luchtballon, die ik al lang heb doorgeprikt."
Ook spaarde De Ruiter de spelers niet. Gullit was "een vervelende jongen", de inzet van Frank Rijkaard was "ronduit slecht", Ronald Koeman was "te dik" en Danny Blind op een nacht onbestraft "te laat" terug in het hotel.
De onthullingen van De Ruiter werden in 2010 breed uitgemeten in de media. Ook Beenhakker reageerde. "Arme Nol", sprak Beenhakker. "Ik vind het zielig dat iemand na twintig jaar nog met zijn persoonlijke interpretaties in de aandacht wil komen."
