Cette image remarquable a été prise dans la région de Terra Sabaea, à l’ouest de Augakuh Vallis, par le système d’imagerie de surface en couleur et en stéréo (CaSSIS) embarqué à bord de l’orbiteur ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter de l’ESA-Roscosmos.
Ce motif mystérieux, situé au sommet d’une crête, serait le résultat de l’activité intense de tourbillons de poussière — autrement dit, la convergence de centaines, voire de milliers, de petits tornades martiennes.
L’image est une représentation composite en couleur, où les zones apparaissant plus bleues que la teinte moyenne de Mars sont affichées en bleu vif. En réalité, ces stries apparaîtraient en rouge sombre. Les tourbillons de poussière remuent le matériau de surface, révélant des couches plus fraîches situées en dessous.
La concentration particulièrement marquée de ces stries le long des crêtes reste inexpliquée, mais une hypothèse envisage une relation avec l’ascendance orographique : des masses d’air chargées de dioxyde de carbone s’élèveraient le long des pentes et convergeraient avec d’autres masses d’air, générant ces motifs tourbillonnants.
