Britse ultraloper doorkruist Australië in 35 dagen: ruim twee marathons per dag
Onderweg vielen zijn teennagels uit, een teen begon te rotten en door chronisch slaapgebrek - veroorzaakt door hevige pijn in zijn botten- begon hij te hallucineren. Maar ondanks de zware beproevingen heeft een Britse ultraloper sneller dan ooit de gehele breedte van Australië hardlopend afgelegd. Hij deed het in 35 dagen. Niet alleen voor de eer, maar ook voor het goede doel.
William Goodge (31) begon op 15 april aan de 3800 kilometer lange hardloopwedstrijd op Cottesloe Beach in Perth in het westen van Australië en finishte maandagmiddag op Bondi Beach in Australië, in het oosten van het land. Om het record te verbreken moest Goodge iedere dag gemiddeld 100 kilometer afleggen, wat neerkomt op 2,5 marathon per dag. Het vorige record stond op 39 dagen.
Goodge begon met het lopen van marathons nadat zijn moeder in 2018 aan kanker was overleden. Met deze tocht zamelde hij geld in voor kankerbestrijdingsdoelen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, de VS en Australië.
Toen hij over de finish was gekomen, zei hij tegen de Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) dat de tocht voelde "als een steeds terugkerende nachtmerrie die maar niet wilde eindigen".
Bos bloemen voor moeder
"De eerste negen dagen waren enorm uitdagend, maar je moet je lichaam en geest vertellen dat je, ook al heb je het moeilijk, zult doorzetten en dat je er overheen komt," zei hij.
Even nadat hij over de finish was gekomen, legde Goodge een bos bloemen op het strand van Bondi ter nagedachtenis aan zijn overleden moeder. "Zij was de bijzonderste persoon in mijn leven", vertelde hij aan The Guardian, en voegde eraan toe: "Ze zou trots zijn op alles wat ik heb gedaan. En ze zou ook bezorgd zijn."
Volgens de nieuwe recordhouder was het cruciaal om tijdens zijn tocht te blijven denken aan het ziekteproces van zijn moeder. Het hielp hem om zijn eigen lijden te negeren. "Dus op de momenten dat ik het moeilijk heb, denk ik terug aan die momenten. Ik denk aan de vrouw die ze was, hoe ze was en hoe ze mij steunde," zei hij tegen de SMH. "Ik heb het gevoel dat ze vaak bij me is."
Tijdens zijn race zag Goodge ook veel van wat Australië te bieden heeft, zei hij. "Ik heb al jullie beroemde dieren gezien, afgezien van haaien en krokodillen, maar helaas lagen er veel dood langs de kant van de weg."
Goodge heeft al een ander record op zijn naam staan. Dat van de snelste Brit die de VS heeft doorkruist. Hij liep van Los Angeles naar New York in 55 dagen.
