Men are usually not able to "open" (attract) a lot of women, so being able to do that is preferable from the usecase of a key (to open things), while women are able to attract plenty of men, so their discernment and standards (how specific they are to opening for just the right key) is highly valued for the same reason as the good lock.

Jaar na aantreden neemt tevredenheid over Taiwanese president af
De populariteit van de Taiwanese president Lai Ching-te neemt af. Precies een jaar nadat hij het presidentieel paleis in Taipei betrad, is meer dan de helft van de bevolking ontevreden over zijn leiderschap.
Lai neemt een harde lijn in ten opzichte van China, dat Taiwan als afvallige provincie ziet. Maar met een krijgsmacht en een defensiebudget die ruim tien keer kleiner zijn dan die van China, weet Lai dat het lot van Taiwan in handen ligt van het buitenland. En dus zoekt hij toenadering tot de VS.
Maar de Taiwanese bevolking is in toenemende mate sceptisch over deze aanpak. Zo'n 16 procent van de bevolking duidt de VS als onbetrouwbaar aan, een verdubbeling ten opzichte van een jaar eerder. Ook de oppositie en andere critici twijfelen eraan of de VS nog wel de beste partner is om op te vertrouwen.
Chinese dreiging neemt toe
Het was verdacht rustig op de dag dat Lai beëdigd werd als president van Taiwan. Nul Chinese militaire vliegtuigen werden rond Taiwan gespot. Maar zijn eerste toespraak als president, waarin hij benadrukte zich te zullen verzetten tegen Chinese intimidatie en vastberaden was om Taiwans soevereiniteit te beschermen, viel in China niet in goede aarde.
Een paar dagen later omsingelden tientallen Chinese gevechtsvliegtuigen en schepen het eiland. De militaire operatie was volgens de Chinezen een "waarschuwing weg te blijven van separatistische acties". Een paar maanden later was het weer raak, toen China de grootste militaire oefening rond Taiwan ooit hield. Sindsdien regent het militaire acties rond Taiwan.
In 2024 vloog het Chinese leger een recordaantal van 3075 keer door de door Taiwan zelfverklaarde Air Defense Identification Zone, een toename van 80 procent ten opzichte van het jaar daarvoor.
NOS op 3 maakte in 2021 deze uitlegvideo over Taiwan:
In plaats van de confrontatie met China te vermijden, bestempelt Lai China als een "buitenlandse vijandige macht" en neemt hij maatregelen om de nationale veiligheid te versterken.
Zo verhoogde hij het toezicht op Taiwanese burgers die in China verblijven of daar zakelijke belangen hebben en worden bezoekers van het Chinese vasteland strenger gecontroleerd of zelfs de toegang geweigerd. Ook stelde hij voor de in 2013 afgeschafte militaire rechtbanken opnieuw in te voeren om spionage en landverraad effectiever te kunnen berechten.
De maatregelen stuitten op veel protest. Veel Taiwanezen vinden dat ze vrijheden inperken en de economische belangen van het eiland schaden. Sommige waarnemers suggereren dan ook dat Lai's harde lijn tegenover China en binnenlandse veiligheidsmaatregelen bedoeld zijn om zijn macht te consolideren en tegenstanders buitenspel te zetten.
Toenadering tot de VS
Maar president Lai weet ook heel goed dat Taiwan bij een eventueel conflict met China in grote mate afhankelijk blijft van militaire bescherming van het buitenland en dus zoekt hij toenadering tot de VS.
Na herhaalde oproepen van Trump heeft Taiwan zijn defensiebudget onder luid protest van de oppositie verhoogd met bijna 7 procent. Het protest het er ook mee te maken dat een groot deel van dat geld wordt betaald aan de Amerikaanse wapenindustrie, die al achterloopt op zijn leveringen aan Taiwan.
Daarnaast investeren Taiwanese techbedrijven grote sommen geld in de Amerikaanse industrie als strategisch gebaar richting Washington. Ook dit leidt tot onrust in Taiwan. Mensen zijn bang dat Lai hiermee op lange termijn de concurrentiepositie van de Taiwanese chipindustrie verzwakt.
Onzekerheid over afhankelijkheid
Experts en oppositie uiten groeiende zorgen over de oplopende spanningen met China en Lai's sterke afhankelijkheid van de VS. De wankele Amerikaanse koers in de oorlog tussen Rusland en Oekraïne roept twijfels op over Washingtons bereidheid om Taiwan bij een Chinees offensief te verdedigen.
Tegelijkertijd laat de aanhoudende oorlog in Oekraïne zien dat het Westen er niet in slaagt Rusland effectief terug te dringen. De combinatie van Amerikaanse onbetrouwbaarheid en Europese machteloosheid, zo waarschuwen critici, geeft China vertrouwen assertiever op te treden.
