The Killing Fields in Cambodia are sites where more than 1.3 million people were killed and buried by the Communist Party of Kampuchea during the Khmer Rouge rule from 1975 to 1979. The term "killing fields" was coined by Cambodian journalist Dith Pran after his escape from the regime. The mass killings were part of the broad, state-sponsored Cambodian genocide. The best-known monument of the Killing Fields is at the village of Choeung Ek, which is now a Buddhist memorial site commemorating the victims.
Visiting the Killing Fields can be a highly charged and emotional experience. The site includes fragments of bones, clothes, and untouched communal graves, with a Buddhist memorial stupa filled with skulls as the central focus. The former school buildings of Tuol Sleng, now known as the Genocide Museum, are located in the center of Phnom Penh and serve as another important site for understanding the atrocities committed during this period.
The Khmer Rouge regime arrested and eventually executed almost everyone suspected of connections with the former government or foreign governments, as well as professionals and intellectuals. Ethnic Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, Cham, Cambodian Christians, and Buddhist monks were also targeted. The rationale behind the killings was often to prevent potential future retaliation.
In 2006, the United Nations and the Cambodian government established the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) to bring perpetrators of the genocide to justice. This court has convicted several Khmer Rouge leaders, including Comrade Duch, who was sentenced to life imprisonment.
