Is anyone familiar with jailbreaking Kindles?
I have a Kindle Oasis (9th Gen) that my room mate is using. However, I want her to be able to keep on sideloading ebooks so I want to jailbreak it.
I tried jailbreaking it with WinterBreak: https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/WinterBreak/
I followed the instructions to the letter, double-checked I downloaded the correct archive that corresponds to my Kindle generation, deleted all files (including hidden caches) on the Kindle’s storage, made sure that the Kinde’s firmeware isn’t beyond the supported version range (5.16.2.1.1) but after disabling airplane mode and tapping the cart icon, it just loads the shop instead of executing the jailbreak.
Seems like I’ll have to try a factory reset next. Sigh.

it's unquestionably a good product
daylight readable displays were a thing in the early days of TFT panels, i at one point owned an alcatel phone, with the buttons, but it had a reasonable sized transflective display on it similar to some of the daylight computer ones
i believe you can find devices with this kind of display for military and industrial uses, it's literally the same as regular LCD panels except the reflector is different in that it bounces more light from outside back upwards through the tft array... the tradeoff is the contrast is less and the colours are more washed out but you also don't need to turn on illuminators to see them under external light
i personally minimise my blue light exposure in general, this house i am in has nasty nasty ones mounted on the ceilings and walls but i avoid using them, i have a 620nm red LED light strip in my kitchen for most of the time of dark and all my display panels are always in a low blue setting... reminds me tho, i feel like i should try migrating to a better OS than the one i've got, it was chosen because it supports my video card but at the same time i have all kinds of problems with games, with the OLED having display garbage after waking up after sleeping and none of them allow me to set a full minimal blue setting at night time
but i did also pick up on the creepy hippy vibes of their marketing and if they aren't dedicated to privacy then yeah, no wonder they abandoned nostr, people here are pretty fussy about that

There is a basic flaw in Dandy Andy's analysis of anarchists and anarchism in general. No, anarchists are not part of the "far left". Both "left" and "right", are styles of government. Anarchism is diametrically opposed to *any* style of government. We don't fit in the spectrum of binary political analysis. Personally, I prefer to think of us the forefront of the labor movement. Unlike the left, both near and far, we have moved beyond advocating for collaborationist "unions". It's like advocating for politicians to represent us. Politicians and union bureaucrats don't represent the working class. With very few exceptions, modern unions are essentially labor brokers. They represent their own narrow interest. What is in their own interest is a more favorable relationship between the capitalists and their own narrow (paying) membership. It keeps labor on the job. Que bono?
Anarchists do not advocate for better relationships with the capitalists. Anarchists advocate the abolition of capitalists. In its place, anarchists advocate for, and as far as possible practice, #LibertarianSocialism, i.e. worker self-owned, worker self-managed workplaces, federated with each other by the basic anarchist principles: sharing, cooperation, solidarity, mutual aid, and direct action. So-called "better representatives" are neither wanted nor necessary. We represent ourselves. This is antithetical to the core basics of leftism. They want to get rid of the bosses. They don't want to get rid of bossism. They want the boss's job. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
Self-professed "leftists" have repeatedly slaughtered us wholesale and stacked our bodies in pits. It's time we learned our lesson. Leftists are not our friends. As allies they are unreliable. The only thing they ever do that benefits anarchists is swell the crowd at anti-fascist demos. In a real fight, they are only useful as the very cannon fodder for which they have used anarchists for a century. It would greatly behoove us to avoid having real fight with the fascists. #CivilWarII wouldn't be fought between states or regions. It would be fought between neighbors. It would be a bloodbath. It would also be America's national suicide. The world would pick our bones and we'd deserve it. A lot of people think we deserve it already.
Since we want peace, we must prepare for war. The fascists are planning to kill us in a bloody civil war. They are armed and dangerous. They're organizing, even as we speak. They have friends in high places. They have lawyers, guns and money. We'd damned well better be ready to deal with them if they ever work up enough nerve to attack. We'd better not planning to be cannon fodder for the left, either. The left would sell us out. Again. For sure. History is very clear on this point.
Does anyone sane still think we should disarm ourselves? Just wondering, not trying to incite any untoward behavior.

Love the device but I’m not very happy with their comms over all.
Android 16 is about to be released and they’re still stuck on Android 13.
No news about their Sol:OS 1.0 release that was supposedly to launch “early 2025”.
No one knows which Android version their Sol:OS 1.0 is supposed to be based on.
Last Android update shipped in December 2024.
Both orange keys are still useless a year after they released DC-1.
Privacy Policy situation is still unclear.
Their nostr presence doesn’t feel authentic.
The price was steep before they got hit by the tarrifs as well.
I hope they’ll make it but without some serious investment in software and better, more open communications, I’m not very hopeful for their future.
