"Ik ben vanmorgen als enige vertrokken uit Zeewolde. Maar naar gelang ik dichtbij kwam, zag ik steeds meer rood. Dat geeft zo'n fijn gevoel. Ik ken niemand, maar we hebben allemaal hetzelfde ideaal."
Meer dan 100.000 Nederlanders, volgens een schatting van de organisatie, protesteerden gisteren tegen het kabinetsstandpunt over Israël. Het was daarmee de grootste demonstratie in jaren in ons land. Allemaal gekleed in dezelfde kleur riep de menigte premier Schoof op een "rode lijn" te trekken tegen het geweld.
"Ontroerend en enorm verbindend", reageert Mirte Bosch van Oxfam Novib, een van de negentig organisaties die de betoging initieerden. Ze spreekt van een breed gedragen, nationale actie, die laat zien dat het thema "enorm leeft onder de Nederlandse bevolking".
Kantelmoment
Samenkomende ontwikkelingen leidden tot de hoge opkomst, denkt hoogleraar Sociale verandering en conflict Jacquelien van Stekelenburg van de Vrije Universiteit. De intensivering van de strijd door Israël, wetenschappelijke discussie over genocide, het schuivende kabinetsstandpunt en oproepen als die van burgemeester Halsema brachten volgens haar een kantelmoment.
"Het kwam allemaal samen deze week", zegt Van Stekelenburg, die ook wijst op peilingen in die richting. "Dat creëerde voor een brede coalitie van organisaties een heel concreet "collective action frame": wat is er aan de hand, wie is de schuldige en wat kun je eraan doen? De oproep was gericht aan de regering: hé, ga in actie komen, laat je stem horen."
De gezamenlijke organisaties hebben blijkbaar "de juiste snaar weten te raken", denkt Marjon Rozema van Amnesty International. Men had aanvankelijk ingestoken op 2000 deelnemers om een rode lijn door Den Haag te vormen, maar de opkomst werd een veelvoud daarvan. Met 100.000 zouden er meer betogers zijn geweest dan bij de klimaatmars, de boerenprotesten of coronademonstraties.
Gezinnen, baby's en hondjes
Opvallend was de grote verscheidenheid van mensen die van het Malieveld naar het Vredespaleis liepen. Waar pro- en anti-Israël demonstraties tot nu toe vaak een kwestie waren van mensen die het conflict al langer volgden, kwamen hier opvallend veel Nederlanders op af die zich nog nooit hadden laten horen. "Er zijn mensen uit alle hoeken van het land, alle lagen van de bevolking. Mensen komen met gezinnen, nemen zelfs hun hond mee, baby's...", somt Rozema op.
"Het was en-en", zag Van Stekelenburg. "Er waren heel veel mensen die bijvoorbeeld al op universiteiten hebben gedemonstreerd, maar het heldere frame van die brede coalitie leidde ertoe dat er ook mensen stonden die de afgelopen 2,5 jaar nog nooit de straat op zijn gegaan. Dat veel mensen voor het eerst demonstreren zegt iets over hoe het onderwerp leeft."
Juist de betrokkenheid van een breed scala aan maatschappelijke organisaties zal daarbij de doorslag hebben gegeven naar Den Haag te gaan. "Voorheen was het organiseren van een demonstratie voorbehouden aan de vakbonden of de Amnesty's van deze wereld, met een eigen achterban. Door sociale media kan iedereen het. Daardoor waren er meer demonstraties, maar wel kleiner. Dit kun je vergelijken met de klimaatmars, toen ging het om zo'n 80.000 man."
'Elk mensenleven telt'
Een oudere dame trok een parallel met de antikernwapenbetoging van 1983, met een half miljoen mensen nog altijd de grootste uit onze geschiedenis. "Ik kwam nu weer op het Malieveld, daar was ik toen voor het laatst geweest." Haar vriendin: "Vaak genoeg zeggen we tegen elkaar: er wordt nooit meer gedemonstreerd. Vandaag wel."
"Ik was er klaar mee", zei ook een oudere man uit Zeewolde. "Elke keer die beelden op tv van hongerende kinderen die elkaar verdrukken om maar wat eten." Hij wees "voor de nuance" op een A4'tje dat hij op zijn borst had geplakt. "En de gijzelaars vrij", staat er. "Uiteindelijk telt elk mensenleven."
Open zenuw
Volgens de organisatoren van het protest laat de hoge opkomst zien dat het Gaza-conflict ook in Nederland een open zenuw is. Bosch van Oxfam Novib denkt dat er een duidelijk signaal is afgegeven. "Als er mogelijk sprake is van genocide, dan onderneem je actie. Dan blijf je niet militair samenwerken, dan blijf je geen handel drijven, dan blijf je niet politieke rugdekking geven."
Toen aan het eind van de middag de manifestatie afliep, bleven de deelnemers in hun rode shirts opvallen in het Haagse straatbeeld. Onderweg naar de trein of bijkomend op een terrasje. Ineens was zichtbaar hoeveel mensen geven om het leed in Gaza.
Van Stekelenburg vindt het een slimme keuze om iedereen gelijk te kleden. Een symbolische kleur, van de rode kaart, het rode stoplicht, rood van woede. "Onderschat dat effect niet: beelden resoneren. Misschien kun je je nog de Belgische Witte Marsen herinneren? Het zou me niets verbazen als we het hier over 10 jaar ook nog over hebben."
"Ik dacht dat er niet zo veel mensen mee bezig waren, maar nu zie ik dat het onwijs leeft", zegt een vader die met zijn drie kinderen was gekomen. "Ik hoop dat mensen dat zien. Dat ze voelen dat het niet oké is wat er gebeurt."

What usage are you assuming on that account? Could it make sense to have different tiers in terms of how much people use it? After all they’re not paying for “an account” but rather just for traffic, right?
Or is it that the people posting to the server are also subsidizing everyone reading from the server for free?
