Het blijft dringen bovenin de Premier League, maar Arsenal heeft na landskampioen Liverpool als tweede Engelse ploeg een Champions League-ticket te pakken. De 'Gunners' wonnen in eigen huis met 1-0 van Newcastle United, dat zich op de derde plaats handhaaft, maar nog flink aan de bak moet om hetzelfde te bereiken.
Het duel in Londen kende een opwindende openingsfase en het was aan beide keepers te danken dat doelpunten uitbleven. De eerste redding kwam op naam van Arsenal-doelman David Raya, die daarmee zijn eigen fout goedmaakte. Hij had de bal pardoes in de voeten van Bruno Guimarães gespeeld, maar voorkwam met een knappe reactie een afstraffing.
Ook op een van richting veranderde schuiver van Harvey Barnes, kopbal van dichtbij van Dan Burn en rebound van Sven Botman bleek Raya een antwoord te hebben. Tussendoor hield aan de overzijde van het veld Nick Pope op miraculeuze wijze de ook al van dichtbij inkoppende Thomas Partey van scoren.
Daarmee was het voor lange tijd gedaan met het spektakel. Pas na rust kreeg Arsenal het publiek weer op de banken en Declan Rice, de man van de twee fraaie vrije trappen in de Champions League tegen Real Madrid, bekroonde het overwicht met een doeltreffende uithaal: 1-0.
Arsenal bleef de bovenliggende partij en moest alleen tegen het einde alert zijn toen de bezoekers er een slotoffensief tegenaan probeerden te gooien. Door de overwinning zal Arsenal achter Liverpool, dat maandag aantreedt tegen Brighton & Hove Albion, als tweede eindigen in de Premier League.
Vardy's 200ste in zijn 500ste
Het reeds gedegradeerde Leicester City boekte z'n vierde zege sinds Ruud van Nistelrooij in november vorig jaar er de scepter zwaait. Er werd in eigen huis met 2-0 gewonnen van Ipswich Town, dat ook al een eind had zien komen aan het verblijf op het hoogste niveau in Engeland.

Het bizarre kampioensjaar van PSV: van de hemel naar de hel en weer terug
De 26ste landstitel van PSV verdwijnt vermoedelijk niet snel meer uit het collectieve geheugen. Het was een jaar van uitersten. Een terugblik op het bizarre kampioensseizoen van de Eindhovenaren.
Veerman mist uitdaging
PSV regeert in de zomer van 2024 bij de hervatting van de eredivisie meteen met harde hand. De regerend landskampioen noteert ruime overwinningen, maar wat direct opvalt is dat de zeges van de formatie van Peter Bosz minder overtuigend zijn dan het vorige seizoen.
Al in de tweede en derde speelronde geeft Joey Veerman op eerlijke wijze een inkijkje in de gemoedstoestand van het dan heersende PSV. "Het is eigenlijk geen goed gevoel. Je wil geen tegengoals krijgen, maar je weet dat we op een gegeven moment toch wel gaan scoren", vertelt de Volendammer na de uitzege bij Heracles (1-3).
Na grote zege van PSV bij Almere City (1-7) laat Veerman zich in vergelijkbare woorden uit. "Het is lekker dat je veel scoort, maar aan de andere kant mis je wel een stuk uitdaging", vertelt de middenvelder. Het zijn woorden die later in het seizoen veel meer lading krijgen.
Het wordt voorzichtig duidelijk dat de PSV-machine niet meer zo geolied is als vorig seizoen. Trainer Peter Bosz deelt in die fase al een waarschuwing uit. "Ik heb altijd gezegd: aan de top komen, is makkelijker dan aan de top blijven."
Grandioze weken, maar dan gaat het mis
Hoewel het misschien iets minder sprankelt, gaat PSV in het najaar stug door met winnen. De club lijdt weliswaar op 2 november een 3-2 nederlaag bij Ajax, maar dat wordt in Eindhoven dan nog als incident beschouwd. Want na die verloren topper beleeft PSV grandioze weken.
FC Groningen (5-0), FC Utrecht (2-5) en FC Twente (6-1) worden met dikke cijfers verslagen. Ook in de Champions League laat de club zich zien. PSV verslaat Girona (4-0) en maakt tegen Sjachtar Donetsk een indrukwekkende comeback door in de 87ste, 90ste en 95ste minuut een 0-2 achterstand in een 3-2 zege om te zetten.
De euforie lijkt vervolgens bedwelmend te werken in Eindhoven, want half december gaat het mis. PSV verliest in de Champions League van Brest (1-0) en vier dagen later incasseert het ook een nederlaag tegen sc Heerenveen (1-0).
"Een topclub verliest niet twee keer achter elkaar. We zijn dus geen topclub. Er klopte helemaal niks van vandaag. Het was gewoon slecht", moppert Bosz na het verlies in Friesland.
PSV lijkt kwetsbaar, maar gaat alsnog als soevereine koploper de winterstop in, met zes punten voorsprong op Ajax.
PSV en Bosz kiezen ervoor om in de relatief korte winteronderbreking in Nederland te blijven. De club speelt ook geen oefenwedstrijd. Die aanpak blijkt allerminst voor frisse hoofden in de selectie te zorgen.
Bij de hervatting van de competitie gaat het meteen mis in de thuiswedstrijd tegen AZ (2-2). PSV flirt enkele dagen later met bekeruitschakeling tegen eerstedivisionist Excelsior (5-4 zege na verlenging). Een fikse tegenvaller in dat bekerduel: spelmaker Malik Tillman valt geblesseerd uit en is maanden uitgeschakeld.
Onrust
Het begint stilaan te rommelen in Eindhoven. Lang krijgt in die periode de kans om naar Napoli te vertrekken, maar PSV wil de aanvaller niet laten gaan. Lang legt zich erbij neer, maar is teleurgesteld. Als klap op de vuurpijl krijgt de aanvaller het aan de stok met de fans van PSV.
Mede daardoor belandt PSV in een neerwaartse spiraal. Wat niet meehelpt: steunpilaren Jerdy Schouten en Joey Veerman, de machinekamer van dit PSV, worstelen met hun vorm en fitheid.
PSV krijgt het in februari zwaarder en zwaarder. De club raakt de koppositie kwijt aan het onverstoorbare Ajax, dat de zeges aaneenrijgt. Er ontstaat een situatie die onomkeerbaar lijkt.
Indrukwekkende zege op Juventus
Een indrukwekkende zege op Juventus (3-1) in de tussenronde van de Champions League doet de kritiek even verstommen. Uitblinker Lang bulkt ineens van het vertrouwen: "Als wij in de eredivisie zouden spelen met de dezelfde intensiteit als tegen Juventus, dan worden we makkelijk kampioen."
Maar het blijkt een uitzondering, de intensiteit is ver te zoeken wanneer PSV tussen 26 februari en 4 maart een horrorweek beleeft. De landskampioen incasseert een dubbele nederlaag tegen Go Ahead Eagles (beker en competitie) en gaat op de pijnbank in de Champions League: 1-7 tegen Arsenal .
PSV toont daarna licht herstel, maar in een rechtstreekse confrontatie met Ajax gaat het weer mis. De Amsterdammers boeken een 0-2 zege in Eindhoven nemen een voorsprong van negen punten. "Normaal gesproken geeft Ajax dit niet meer weg", sipt Bosz na afloop.
Ondanks alle misère zijn er twee lichtpuntjes die later een bepalende rol spelen voor PSV. Malik Tillman en Sergiño Dest maken hun rentree tegen Ajax.
Vooral de terugkeer van Tillman blijkt van groot belang, want PSV begint zijn wedstrijden weer te winnen. Op een overtuigende manier, bovendien. Op 14 mei doet PSV vervolgens met een ijzersterke Tillman zijn werk tegen Heracles Almelo (4-1). Als Ajax diep in blessuretijd de 2-2 om de oren krijgen tegen FC Groningen, barst op het veld in Eindhoven een volksfeest los.
Dat waarmee niemand - behalve Van der Vaart - nog rekening hield, is toch gebeurd: PSV pakt op de voorlaatste speeldag de koppositie. En maakt het op de slotdag van de eredivisie overtuigend af op bezoek bij Sparta.
Kampioen, na een seizoen waarin de ploeg van Bosz van de voetbalhemel naar de -hel ging en weer terug.
