Yong, a Brazilian artist from Brasília, has dedicated himself to graffiti since 2005. In 2023, he participated in the W3 Arte Urbana initiative, a project by the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the Federal District that aimed to transform public spaces, such as bus stops, into open-air galleries. "I came on the weekend with the bus stop closed and painted. It's cool because a bus stop has everything to do with the city, with urban mobility. I think graffiti has to do with that," he said. The graffiti was officially recognized as a manifestation of Brazilian culture by Law 14,996/2024, sanctioned in October 2024 by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. With two days, 20 cans of paint, and a lot of imagination, Yong was able to transform and change a small part of the daily routine of hundreds of Brasilians who pass by the 707 North bus stop every day. "I'm a very fun guy, I like color and fun. I've always liked that," he said. Artistic style Yong stands out for his vibrant works and characters inspired by animations. "I paint a party, a fun in the form of little monsters," he said. Additionally, the graffiti artist avoids realism by using his imagination to create and alter things in the real world. "I want to escape reality, bring a little color to life. I like to paint animals, but I'll never paint a yellow giraffe, you know? My giraffe will be red, blue, pink. I like colorful life," he explained. Inspired by other artist friends, such as Camilla Siren and Toys Daniel, Yong also brings references from animated drawings, films, series, comics, music, and everyday life. "I have many references and make a mix of everything. But also comes from what I've lived and learned. I read, listen, study, and turn it into Yong," he explained. "Art is something that comes naturally and from fun references. A little bit of everything, always happy. I can't paint anything 'bad', anything aggressive," he said. With affection when speaking about the city where he was born, Yong believes that Brasília receives well the graffiti due to its architecture, which helps when painting. "Despite its deficiencies, being a new city, made in a way that sometimes pushes people away, I love my city. I'm proud to be Brazilian. I've lived in other places and Brasília is really very different," he said. Prejudice and discrimination During his career, the artist has had a certain privilege regarding discrimination against graffiti. "We're very privileged because in other parts of the world, graffiti is super badly viewed. I think it's the normal person, the layman, the street guy, everyone gets stuck," he said. However, he believes that prejudice is present in the field due to the lack of distinction between tagging and graffiti. "I think there will always be this prejudice because it's something peripheral, like anything that comes from the periphery. Then the crowd has a certain judging look," he added. Passion for graffiti Cans of paint, a lot of passion, and detachment. For Yong, these are the main elements to make graffiti. If asked to define graffiti, he would say it's transforming urban environments with tagging, without receiving payment or requests. "Graffiti to me is painting on the street without anyone paying you or asking you. Going out with your paint and transforming the environment. It's transforming, painting, messing around, interacting. Type, there's love, but no attachment," he said. Today, at 38 years old, the graffiti artist realizes artistic works parallel to graffiti. He does illustrations for both Brazilian and international brands, is a professor, runs urban art workshops, and paints facades of houses and shop windows, restaurants, hotels, and other commercial establishments. But it's in graffiti in public spaces that he finds himself. "The main thing has always been going to the street, finding a nice place, a dirty place, and painting and transforming. The rest is secondary," he said. Realization of the graffiti artist For the artist, visibility is an important aspect, both for professional return and personal realization. For him, it's gratifying to see that he painted a place that many people will see and enjoy. "I always paint places that people will see. Rarely do I enter a bakery and make a tag. I'll paint this here, waste a lot of paint there, and no one will see? It doesn't make sense," he said. Career of the graffiti artist Inspired by his father, who also drew, Yong grew up passionate about drawing and enchanted by tagging. He started tagging as a joke at the age of 12. "You start playing. Despite being a dream since childhood, he never considered himself a good artist and, therefore, did not imagine that one day he could live from his art. Despite his talent, Yong is very modest. "I never imagined myself as an artist, nor drawing. Even though I liked playing [with tagging]. I didn't know how to draw, even today I think I don't know," he said. At 19, tagging stopped being a joke for the artist, and he started investing more effort into what he did. However, neither he nor his family saw the possibility of him making a living or working with it. So he started a Graphic Design course at 20. Since he liked illustrating and painting, it was the closest course to what he wanted to do. During the course, Yong intercalated his works from college with his urban art works. He tagged on weekends and even earned some money. Until it no longer made sense to do Graphic Design, and he left the course to dedicate himself to graffiti and other artistic projects. After leaving the course, he worked in advertising agencies, was an art director, and worked as a graphic designer in other companies, always balancing with his work with graffiti. Until in 2013, he quit all his parallel jobs and dedicated himself exclusively to tagging. In 2014, he accepted the art direction of the electoral campaign of former President Dilma Rousseff. His first solo exhibition, Tropical Monsters, was held in 2015 in Miami and was so successful that he returned to the United States in 2016 to exhibit the exhibition he named Pop Jungle in Orlando. During this time, he made several collective exhibitions in Brasília.
