Het eigenaardige pad van Ajax-trainer Farioli als filosofiestudent en keeperstrainer
In een klein Toscaans plaatsje genaamd Gambassi Terme bevindt zich een restaurantje in een oude boerderij dat dit seizoen veel aandacht trok van Nederlandse toeristen met een Ajax-hart.
Gestoken in Ajax-tenue bezoeken de fans Osteria del Castagno, in de hoop een glimp op te vangen van de familie Farioli, die het restaurant bestiert. En misschien ook wel van Francesco Farioli. De Italiaanse trainer maakte in zijn debuutseizoen indruk bij Ajax, leek de Amsterdammers zelfs totaal onverwachts kampioen te maken, maar lijkt nu dan toch de titel aan PSV te moeten laten.
"Ja, er komen veel Nederlanders zoeken naar Francesco", zegt een serveerster van Osteria del Castagno. "Maar Francesco komt hier niet meer." Onlangs hebben de ouders van Farioli - van pensioengerechtigde leeftijd - het restaurant verkocht.
Helpen in de bediening
Hier vond de inmiddels 36-jarige trainer Farioli af en toe de tijd om in de bediening te helpen, terwijl hij ondertussen van hot naar her racete, vastbesloten om onmetelijke successen te bereiken. Aanvankelijk, als tiener, met het idee om het te schoppen tot politicus of - waarom ook niet - tot paus.
Het werd uiteindelijk toch het beroep van voetbalcoach. Daarvoor bewandelde Farioli een eigenaardig pad, dat begon aan de universiteit van Florence. Als filosofiestudent stond hij erop om een scriptie te schrijven over de esthetiek, de schoonheid en de belangrijke rol van de doelman in het voetbal.
Geen dagelijkse kost in de universitaire wereld, natuurlijk. Maar Farioli was vastbesloten, zegt Alessandro Pagnini, zijn 'secondo relatore', tweede scriptiebegeleider.
"Het was een heel interessante scriptie, maar die deed nogal wat stof opwaaien", lacht Pagnini. "Want we waren nog nooit op het idee gekomen om voetbal te combineren met filosofie. Maar hij was heel grondig te werk gegaan. De scriptie werd bekroond op onze universiteit, om haar originaliteit en creativiteit."
"Waarom de keeper zo belangrijk is? Volgens Farioli is hij speler, trainer en toeschouwer ineen. De keeper heeft een grote verantwoordelijkheid, omdat hij het hele spel voor zich ziet en van binnenuit bekijkt. Hij is een soort dominus, een heerser in het veld."
Zelf begon Farioli als jongetje ook als keeper. Maar een bestaan als prof zat er niet in. Hij had zeker talent, zegt zijn oud-keeperstrainer Paolo Galardi. "Maar hij was te klein."
Terwijl Farioli filosofie studeerde, trad hij in de voetsporen van Galardi en werd hij zelf ook keeperstrainer. Al heel jong klom hij op vanuit de onderste regionen van het Italiaanse voetbal om vervolgens een stap naar Qatar te maken, waar hij werkte bij een jeugdacademie.
In 2017, terug in Italië, nam trainer Roberto De Zerbi hem als keeperstrainer in de arm bij Benevento en Sassuolo in de Serie A.
Populair, beleefd en elegant
"Francesco was heel vastberaden", zegt ook zijn oud-wiskundedocente Nicoletta Moscani. A special guy, zo noemt ze hem. "Hij was een mooie jongen, populair bij de meisjes op school, maar ook heel beleefd, heel elegant. Zoals nu nog steeds."
Moscani grijnst van oor tot oor als ze over Farioli spreekt. "Hij was een beetje crazy. In al zijn beslissingen. Heel eigenaardig." Ze bedoelt het positief. "Normaal gesproken denken jongens van die leeftijd toch aan andere dingen. Hij wist echt wat hij wilde. Al heel jong deed hij ervaring op in het buitenland."
Via Turkije, eerst als assistent en later als hoofdtrainer, belandde Farioli vorig seizoen bij OGC Nice. De Zuid-Franse club eindigde als vijfde in de Ligue 1, waarbij onder meer in eigen huis Paris Saint-Germain werd verslagen.
Moscani en Farioli spreken elkaar nog regelmatig. "Toen Francesco afstudeerde in de filosofie was hij erg blij. Hij stuurde zijn scriptie op en kwam terug bij ons op de middelbare school om leerlingen een paar keer les te geven. We bleven daarna contact houden. Ja, ik ben heel trots op hem."
Alle verwachtingen die je als leerkracht van een leerling met potentie kunt hebben, heeft Farioli wel overtroffen, zegt ze.
Warme relatie
Ook tussen de 61-jarige keeperstrainer Galardi en zijn vroegere pupil blijft de relatie warm. Galardi bezocht in december een wedstrijd van Ajax en kreeg een Ajax-shirt met 'Paolo' achterop cadeau van Farioli. Het heeft een mooi plaatsje gekregen in de tattooshop die Galardi tegenwoordig runt in het stadje Pistoia.
Galardi volgt het voetbal van de Amsterdammers dit seizoen op de voet. Ajax voetbalt zonder te sprankelen. Daarom klinkt er ook kritiek. Maar Galardi is realistisch en neemt het op voor zijn vriend. "Het mooie Ajax-voetbal kan alleen gespeeld worden met voetballers als Cruijff en Van Basten. Francesco's elftal is oké, maar niet bijzonder, zonder grote spelers."
Farioli kiest daarom voor het collectief, voor resultaat, zegt Galardi.
