En mars 1979, la sonde Voyager 1 photographie des panaches éruptifs s'échappant à plus de 200 km au-dessus de la surface de Io. Ces panaches sont très riches en vapeur de soufre et en SO2. On a longtemps cru que les volcans de Io étaient des volcans de soufre fondu, jusqu'à ce qu'on prouve que ce volcanisme était bien un volcanisme silicaté, les composés soufrés n'étant que des volatils annexes. En orbite autour de Jupiter de 1995 à 2003, la sonde Galileo confirme et précise ces résultats. Sur cette figure, Galileo a surpris deux éruptions simultanées le 28 juin 1997. Un panache se voit sur le bord gauche de Io (détail sur l'encadré supérieur). Un autre panache est localisé sur le terminateur (limite jour-nuit), au centre de l'image (détail sur l'encadré inférieur). Ce dernier panache apparait comme un cercle blanc et gris, et un triangle brun. Le cercle correspond au panache vu de dessus. Le triangle brun correspond à l'ombre du panache, ombre particulièrement grande lorsque le soleil est rasant, comme c'est le cas au niveau du terminateur.
