Sobre a projeção de Mercator (a que estica altas latitudes)
Não é p/ 'agigantar o norte explorador capitalista às custas dos trópicos explorados'. A projeção visa **navegação**. *Visa que linhas retas no mapa representem rotas com direção constante na Bússola*.
Um 'grid' regular latitude x longitude não é util pra navegar, pois um grau de latitude sempre é a circunferencia da terra (40.000 km) dividido por 360 graus = 111km. Mas um grau de longitude só é 111km no equador, diminui até tender a zero nos pólos.
Imagine-se de pé no polo norte. Agora mova-se 1 metro na direção do Brasil. Se andar para o leste, tracará um circulo de raio um metro e voltará ao mesmo ponto. Um grau de longitude agora é minusculo.
Então: a projeção de Mercator 'estica' o eixo de latitude de forma que traçando uma linha entre dois pontos, se possa medir o ângulo em relação ao norte, necessário como comando de direção ao timoneiro, sem precisar de outras contas. Assim pode-se traçar rotas desenhando-se apenas linhas retas.
Lembrem que *'navegar' é determinar o que fazer a cada momento para chegar ao destino*, e, *se seu instrumento de orientação é bússola, Mercator resolve*. Por ser útil aos navegantes, passou a ser comum em barcos. Assim, se espalhou pelo mundo, e se tornou a mais comum.
Desenvolvido pelo Portugues Pedro Nunes, que lidava com navegadores em Lisboa, e praticamente inventou derivadas ao explicar o cálculo 'em pequenos degraus'.
Publicada toda a teoria, faltava preencher uma tabela para gerar as coordenadas do grid distorcido. Ele preencheu 2 linhas, e *literalmente* escreveu que esperava que algum *adolescentem laboriosum* a completasse.
O tal adolescente foi o Mercator. Preencheu a tabela e desenhou mapas pros concorrentes holandeses usarem.
PS: Outro exemplo de teórico genial mas incapaz de aplicar a idéia, diferente do outro que carrega o piano pra idéia funcionar.
