De hele bevolking in de Gazastrook loopt een kritiek risico op hongersnood. Dat zegt VN-voedselwaakhond IPC in een nieuw rapport. De situatie is ernstig verslechterd ten opzichte van de laatste analyse, waarin IPC de situatie ook al 'catastrofaal' noemde.
Doordat Israël heeft aangekondigd de militaire activiteiten in Gaza op te voeren, is volgens het rapport "het risico op hongersnood niet alleen reëel, maar ook waarschijnlijker"
De mate van voedselonzekerheid is door het IPC in vijf categorieën opgedeeld. Bijna een kwart van de mensen in de Gazastrook zit in de hoogste categorie, die als catastrofaal wordt bestempeld. Meer dan de helft van de mensen zit in een noodtoestand, de vierde categorie. In de derde categorie, een crisistoestand, zitten nog eens een half miljoen mensen.
Het IPC verwacht dat bijna 71.000 Gazaanse kinderen die jonger dan 11 maanden oud zijn het komende jaar ondervoed raken, van wie ongeveer 14.000 ernstig.
Israël laat al ruim 2 maanden geen eten en andere goederen meer toe in Gaza. Inmiddels zijn de voorraden van het Wereldvoedselprogramma (WFP) van de VN op. Datzelfde geldt voor voedsel van de hulporganisatie Palestijnse Rode Halve Maan en de VN-kinderrechtenorganisatie Unicef. Die heeft geen hulpmiddelen meer voor iedereen in het door honger geteisterde gebied.
De mensen in Gaza zijn vrijwel volledig afhankelijk van hulpmiddelen van buiten de Palestijnse gebieden, omdat er in Gaza zelf door de oorlog geen voedsel meer geproduceerd kan worden.
De blokkade is volgens Israël bedoeld om Hamas te dwingen om gijzelaars vrij te laten en stelt dat er genoeg hulp is binnengekomen voordat de blokkade inging.
Maar het IPC stelt dat er een staakt-het-vuren moet komen om het risico op hongersnood te verkleinen en het catastrofale risiconiveau terug te draaien. Ook moeten er weer hulpmiddelen toegelaten worden in het gebied en moeten burgers en hulpverleners beschermd worden, zodat ze hun werk kunnen doen.
