that's been me for a long time but i'm planning to get my license and travel in a van with my cat to ... i never knew the name of it but ok, serbian carpathian mountains. i've been on the edges of parts of this area, it's distinctly named because the balkans range crosses over from a bit furhter south in serbia (near nis) across northern parts of bulgaria, Sofia is on that range.
anyway, random geography fact. i love scooters, they are my favourite generic type of transport, in fact if i could get a light enough one i'd get a mount for it so it can hang at the back of my van, and be my main way around while i am parked, in warm seasons. i've seen this brand "tomos" that do this underbone style, which is my favourite style of scooter, i used to own a bigger more bulky one called "Sachs Madass" which was pretty sweet but underpowered to cope with mountains. i'd probably get the lightest little 50cc i can find and then swap in a big bore cylinder and if it didn't already, put light spoked wheels on it and maybe maybe a turbo.

An odd thing happened to financial markets when Israel bombed Iranian nuclear sites last week.
For the most part, the moves were what you would have expected: Stocks fell worldwide and U.S. benchmark crude jumped 7.3% Friday, wrapping up its biggest weekly gain since the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre in Israel. Meanwhile, the price of gold, a traditional haven in times of conflict, rose 1.5% to a record.
But gold’s supposed digital equivalent failed to play the same role. Bitcoin fell by 1.6% Friday, even more than the S&P 500, concluding a 4% drop over three days.
This isn’t the first time: Back in April, in the week following President Trump’s “Liberation Day” announcement, stocks swooned worldwide. Bitcoin did too, dropping 7.5% in six days. And it was directionless in February 2022 as Russian troops massed on Ukraine’s border and then invaded. Gold, meanwhile, edged higher as tensions rose and kept climbing when the shooting began.
It is tempting to gloss over bitcoin’s failures as a hedge against chaos in what has otherwise been a great year for cryptocurrencies. The U.S. government has gone from skepticism to a full-throated endorsement under the Trump administration.
Even if it has lost some antiestablishment street cred, bitcoin still shares qualities with gold. Its supply is limited, it is a trustless asset, it can’t be destroyed and it is even easier than gold to transfer or hide.
So why has it failed as a geopolitical insurance policy? One reason is bitcoin’s digital nature. If you were to find yourself sitting in the smoldering ruins of your town after society collapsed, cryptocurrency at a brokerage like Coinbase, or even on a thumb drive in your pocket, wouldn’t be useful. Physical gold still might.
Another reason is why most people buy crypto lately: It excites speculators in ways gold doesn’t. In the past five years, bitcoin has become positively correlated with stocks, notes CME Group.
When investors are in a risk-on mood these days, they especially feel like buying cryptocurrency or other assets with little in the way of intrinsic value such as meme stocks. It’s the “number go up” trade.
Yet bitcoin could shine as brightly as gold in one calamity on investors’ minds lately: a loss of faith in fiat currencies like the dollar. Rising government indebtedness worldwide might make inflation the easiest way out, boosting assets that are nobody’s liability.
So while bitcoin doesn’t seem to be an all-weather insurance policy, at least it has a lot more upside if things go very right instead of very wrong. What other asset appeals to both extreme pessimists and optimists?

A Trump Mobile U.S.-Made Phone For $499? That’d Be a Tall Order

The Trump Organization said it would launch a mobilephone service called Trump Mobile and plans to sell a $499 T1 Phone beginning in August with some features that beat the current top iPhone.
The gold Android phone, a press release said, would be “proudly designed and built in the United States.”
The question is: How? President Trump has targeted phone makers in his tariff push, threatening extra levies on Apple if it didn’t shift to U.S. production. No major smartphone maker currently makes its products in the U.S., as the displays, processors and cameras they use are mainly sourced from Asia.
In April, The Wall Street Journal investigated what it would take to make an iPhone in the U.S. Supply-chain experts agreed the U.S. would need years and many billions of dollars to establish the factories and skillsets needed to match China’s output. And even if it were possible, the labor and infrastructure costs would be astronomical, leading to phones whose build costs are many times those of the iPhone.
A spokesman for the Trump Organization said in an email that “manufacturing for the new phone will be in Alabama, California and Florida.”
Despite language in the press release, Eric Trump, one of the president’s sons, indicated that the first wave of phones wouldn’t be built here. “You can build these phones in the United States,” the Trump son told podcaster Benny Johnson Monday after holding up a gilded device that looked like an iPhone. “Eventually, all the phones can be built in the United States of America. We have to bring manufacturing back here.”
So it’s possible—even plausible—that these phones would initially come from China because, at that price point, only Chinese makers like Xiaomi and Oppo have hardware to match.
“There’s absolutely no way you could make the screen, get that memory, camera, battery, everything” in the U.S., said Tinglong Dai, a professor of operations management and business analytics at Johns Hopkins University’s Carey Business School.
Dai estimated it would take “at least five years” for the U.S. to establish the infrastructure necessary to make “Made in USA” smartphones a real possibility. He also played down the push to move smartphone manufacturing to the U.S. More immediately, the focus is on building technology such as semiconductors and medical devices, Dai said.
