Free markets tend to be the best at directing efforts toward the most-useful occupation, as they keep profit margins low, without crushing them so far that it discourages effort. If you see loads of money being thrown around, but you're underwhelmed by the results, then that's an indicator that the market isn't free enough.
Throwing more money at a problem doesn't automatically solve the problem. Throwing too little money at a problem, results in nobody trying to solve it.
Nostr needs to find more balance. ⚖️

I also use paid relays, and WoT relays, and my own Haven relay. So yes, I agree that there are solutions people can take advantage of. However, these solutions disadvantage new users who are just trying Nostr out for the first time.

That's an interesting idea. It's effectively an attempt to create a distinction between legitimate identities and potential spammers by adding a "cost" to creating an identity, yet without the need for a centralized authority.
However, I don't know how effective it would be. The PoW would have to be high enough that it imposes a significant cost for spammers to have to spin up a new identity once the one they were using is no longer being seen by most users. Yet, that also means it will be a considerable wait for a new user on standard hardware to generate enough PoW to finally be able to post.
Indeed, a spammer could have his GPU working overnight to have multiple Nostr keys ready to go, so that as one is detected as a spammer, he just uses the next one in line, with the PoW note already having been generated.
I think the cost to the new user would be greater than the imposition caused to a determined spammer. Indeed, the more I look at PoW as a possible spam deterrent, the less it makes sense and really just ends up being a deterrent against new users in general. For it to be effective at deterring spam, it needs to be a high enough amount of PoW that it is an annoyance to average users, too. Especially those posting from mobile devices.

Helpful, and that is a form of what Amethyst does. However, it requires a number of people within a user's community to see and report the spam before it will be hidden. Not ideal.
The preference would be that NO ONE has to see it, particularly for the worst types of unwanted notes.

Voting (for whatever "side") is literally slavery by consent
The Plebtorial system which originated within Ancient Roman Society, developed and changed over time and became the Electoral system.
To give the Plebeians the illusion that they were in control, they were offered elections so it would appear they could choose who ran “their” government.
Note: of course the government was never the peoples, but those who owned the government, the Patricians, with all the candidates already preselected.
This deception begins with the ballot paper; when you register to vote, you handover power of attorney.
You are asked to use black ink and mark an “X” in a box, which is the signature of a “simpleton”.
This action declares you are “incompetent” to make a decision, and are asking those in control to decide for you.
If you think you can vote your way out of tyranny, then signing an “X” was the correct thing to do.
Note: if you own your own land and are therefore Sovereign, you elect, you don’t vote.
All you are doing when you go to the polling station, is recording your opinion within said poll, so the government can see what the general consensus of the people is, nothing more.

All relays are funded by someone; the funding models are just diverse.

I bet you understand more than you give yourself credit for. You likely know that your identity is your key-pair, that notes are stored on relays, that you can read from and write to more than one relay at a time, and that clients are the apps you use to view notes that were created by others, interact with them, and create your own notes that then get saved to your chosen relays.
That's the basic plumbing of Nostr, right?
I think the idea is theoretically possible, but it would require both clients and relays to be developed that support pay-per-reply, and would likely need to use eCash, which means Nostr clients would likely need to all support NIP-60. That's probably the direction things are going, but it may take a bit to get there.

Why does spam exist?
It only exists because the following three things are true:
1. People with malicious intent exist.
2. People can create new Nostr identities for free.
3. New identities can write to relays for free with the expectation that their notes will be seen and may not be removed for a time.
It is not possible to change 1, and 2 cannot be changed without a central authority that issues "approved" Nostr keys. Not a road we want to go down.
That means the only way to fight spam is by improving the ability of relays to block spam from being written to them in the first place and/or recognize and remove it quickly.
It is then the responsibility of users to only read from relays that do so. This means they need to have a place to find such relays. A relay marketplace, of sorts, that they can be referred to or that can be displayed within their Nostr client.
Clients aren't entirely off the hook here either. Defaults matter, and clients should have sensible default relays for new users that haven't built a relay list of their own yet. i have a plan for how to make a business using nostr technology, but i am unfortunately only an inventor and back end programmer.
i have decided that rather than waste my time learning how to build UIs, i'm stacking my sats and in a few months time i will find a trustworthy, good quality front end developer to build an MVP UI
i'm not sure exactly what feature set i'm going to target for this, but it will be a subset of your basic slack/gmail/gdocs/calendar stack. most likely it will be primarily about a realtime messaging stack like slack, and initially it will only have a web app front end because a good web dev can put together something that is usable on mobile. with that in hand, then i am going to find someone to line up customers, and this is very difficult. it may require at first working with very low-capitalized small projects
i probably will collaborate with gitcitadel if they have the git integration operational.
my target is relatively low because i want to hit it and by a year's time the project be already lifting off.
a lot of work to do, and for now i have to work for someone else whose project has run a long way over expectations of fulfillment because they are not very good at spotting bullshitters pretending to be software developers, who work part time but charge full time wages.
most of the software industry is full of bullshit, with people who have no business sense and no idea what people need. the needs are simple, if you have the sense to realise that you can be the model of a customer yourself, aside from whatever differences you may have in operational philosophy. small, low cap startups who are also aiming to get off the ground as soon as possible.
