**The methodology is clever**: Using economic frameworks to probe AI “preferences” is an elegant way to test for coherence. If responses were truly random or just reflecting training data noise, you wouldn’t expect to see utility functions that generalize well or follow expected utility theory.
**The implications follow logically**: If these really are coherent value systems (rather than statistical quirks), then understanding and controlling them becomes crucial as models become more autonomous.
## Where I’m Skeptical
**The interpretation leap**: There’s a significant jump from “responses can be modeled with utility functions” to “the system has genuine values.” Many complex systems exhibit apparent preferences without conscious valuation. The coherence could emerge from training dynamics rather than representing actual goal-directed cognition.
**Confounding with training**: How do we separate emergent values from increasingly sophisticated modeling of human preferences in training data? Larger models might just be better at inferring and consistently applying the implicit value systems in their training corpus.
**The “values” vs “modeling values” distinction**: Even if an LLM consistently prefers A over B, this might reflect learned patterns about what preferences to express rather than what the system actually “wants” in any meaningful sense.
## Bottom Line
The premise that LLMs develop coherent preference structures seems empirically supported. Whether these constitute “values” in a morally or strategically relevant sense depends on deeper questions about AI cognition that we don’t fully understand yet.
But the practical point stands: if these systems behave *as if* they have coherent values, that matters for alignment regardless of the underlying mechanism.

## The Deeper Issue
The authors seem to assume we can identify “correct” or “reasonable” values relatively straightforwardly. But many of their “concerning” findings might reflect genuine disagreements about values that exist in human societies.
For instance, different cultures do place different values on individual versus collective welfare, and people disagree about appropriate discount rates for future outcomes. Calling these “problematic” when they appear in AI systems presupposes specific moral frameworks.
That said, their broader point about the need for intentional value alignment rather than leaving it to chance seems sound, even if we might disagree about what the target values should be.
