The Federal Police arrested Gilson Machado (PL), former Minister of Tourism in Jair Bolsonaro's (PL) government, on Friday (13) in Recife. The arrest occurred in the same operation, in Brasรญlia, where a search was carried out against Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, former aide to Bolsonaro. The Public Prosecutor's Office (PGR) had authorized a request from the PF to investigate Machado, in a piece sent to the STF on Tuesday (10). The suspicion is that Machado acted together with the Portuguese Consulate in Recife last month to obtain a Portuguese passport for Mauro Cid, according to PF suspicions. When speaking to journalists upon arrival at the IML, Machado denied having made any requests related to Cid. 'I didn't kill anyone, I didn't traffic drugs. I only asked for a passport for my father by phone here at the Consulate in Recife', Machado said. 'I contacted him, and he went to the consulate with my brother.' Machado's intention, according to the piece signed by Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet, with information from the police, was to facilitate Cid's departure from the national territory. However, the former minister did not succeed in obtaining the document. Machado's lawyer, Cรฉlio Avelino, responsible for his defense, told journalists on Friday (13) that Machado gave a statement to a Federal Police delegate. In the early afternoon, the former minister went to the IML to undergo a forensic examination. From there, he was taken into custody by federal police to Abreu e Lima prison in the Greater Recife. Machado had been sought earlier in the week and had denied 'vehemently' having gone to any consulate. He added that he only maintained a phone contact in May with the Portuguese Consulate to request an appointment to renew his father's passport, 'which was done after that request'. Machado is known as Bolsonaro's 'sanfoneiro', participated in the politician's live streams, and was the president of Embratur. In 2022, he ran for senator in Pernambuco but was not elected. He also ran for mayor of Recife in 2024 and lost. He says Bolsonaro is his political mentor, to whom he claims to be loyal. On social media, he defines himself as a veterinarian and a conservative Christian.
