When the monastery where he lived received the bodies of three Franciscan friars who had been martyred in Morocco, Fernando decided to join the Franciscan Order and asked to be named Anthony. He wanted to go to Morocco as well, but ended up being sent to Italy. There, he lived a simple life among the friars and became famous for his sermons. Anthony was buried in a basilica that soon became a place of pilgrimage. Documents record 53 miracles attributed to him.
