if a channel is closed for whatever reason it means that the funds become onchain available again. (lighting is the second layer to transact instantly)
that 0 is the spendable balance in lightning.
I know it’s sadly still more complicated than plain onchain or some custodial service that does it for you or some service like paypal…
but that’s the properties of lightning. all has upsides/downsides.

You can probably get pretty far self teaching and practicing. I am fully self taught but I’ve been designing for a long time. I have a large list of clients behind me and multiple agency experiences.
I’d read everything I can, learn the tools and practice a lot. Goal should be to get paying work in the field as soon as possible. Look for UI/UX designer position once you feel comfortable and have a portfolio. Preferably take on a few freelance clients and make something you can show off that you got paid for.
There’s no time frame I can give - all depends on your motivation, effort and ability to learn and move fast.
All I can say is that no one ever becomes a good designer - it’s always a work in progress and you’ll constantly look back at your previous work wondering how it was so bad.

You talk about different things here. Channels and Alby Hub are completely related. Channels can be closed in any lightning node - this is the basic concept of lightning and also important to make sure you and the channel partner are in full control.
Alby Hub integrates some LSPs but Alby does not provide any channel services.
If your channel was closed you can check with the channel partner. Or you're free to open a channel to any node that you like.

You can choose to either have full control, be self-sovereign and own your own channels (with everything that comes with it) or you depend and rely on other custodial services and everything that comes with that)...

Channels are the basics of how the lightning network works. To stay in full control you or the channel partner can close channels. What channel did you have?
Did you get a channel from a LSP (lightning service provider - like lnserver, megalith, etc.)?
Alby does not provide those channels and has no control over those. The Alby Hub node tries hard to avoid channel closures but it's up to you or the channel partner.
We don't know why it was closed. Often it happens if the channel is not used or if the node is offline for an extended period.

Yes, it is beta and buggy, but it's the only e-cash dev I trust, so I'm sticking with the devil I know.
I have also had good experiences with nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm and Phoenix, so I keep using them, too, and I used nostr:npub1xnf02f60r9v0e5kty33a404dm79zr7z2eepyrk5gsq3m7pwvsz2sazlpr5 for a while and liked it.
I actually am okay with some bugs, if the developers seem to take them seriously, attempt to prevent them, and handle them in a swift and professional manner. Continuous improvement in the quality, from iteration to iteration.
Not financial advice, but my personal opinion.

It's already restricted to the rich... I mean, I don't suppose you have your pilot's license, right?
A typical kind of crappy used "starter plane" is going to cost somewhere between 75 to 200 thousand dollars which most people just can't do for a hobby.
And the reason for that is already because of obscene over-regulation. Getting new planes and new engines approved is incredibly costly, so people are still running reproductions of engines designed in the 1950s - which were designed for leaded fuel.
If a dashboard toggle switch goes out on your '67 Mustang, you just swing by the auto parts store and get a new one that fits and you either install it yourself or you have the guy down the street do it. But if a toggle switch goes out on your '67 Cessna, you are legally required to replace it with an exact replica made by Cessna and the work has to be done by a licensed aircraft mechanic. So you've got all of these unreliable 50+ year old engine and electrical system in the air because it's illegal to replace it with modern electronics.
The only place where these rules are not ridiculous is in planes classified as Experimental Home Built, but this means someone had to manually build the plane (assemble a kit) in their barn. Very few people are prepared to do that, so the economies of scale for kit makers is horrible. So the kits end up being 75 to 200 thousand, but unlike the "starter plane", at least what you get at the end is NEW...
So GA is already only for the rich, because it is already stifled by overregulation.
