Black Colonization of the Khoisan: A Truth Too Inconvenient to Tell

History often frames colonization as a uniquely European crime — but what if the first colonizers of South Africa weren’t white?
This article challenges one of the most uncomfortable blind spots in African historiography: the Bantu-speaking Black Africans who colonized the indigenous Khoisan long before the Dutch ever arrived. From the Khoisan perspective, they were dispossessed twice — first by Black Africans, then by Europeans. Yet only one of these events is widely acknowledged as colonization.
Who Are the Khoisan?
The Khoisan — an umbrella term for the San (hunter-gatherers) and Khoikhoi (pastoralists) — are the original inhabitants of southern Africa. With genetic lineages dating back over 50,000 years, they represent some of the oldest continuous human populations on Earth.
Their societies were decentralized, their economies based on subsistence, and their languages among the most complex on the planet. They lived in balance with the land long before agriculture, livestock, or iron tools arrived on southern soil.
The Bantu Migration: Expansion or Colonization?
Around 500 AD, waves of Bantu-speaking people began migrating from the Cameroon/Nigeria region into central and southern Africa. Over centuries, they brought with them ironworking, crop cultivation, and domesticated animals — giving them significant economic and demographic advantages over the foraging and pastoralist Khoisan.
As Bantu groups expanded into what are now Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the Eastern Cape, they pushed the Khoisan out of their ancestral lands. Some groups were absorbed, others displaced, and many were destroyed outright.
While this process was more gradual and less centralized than later European colonization, the result was the same: the Khoisan lost territory, autonomy, and cultural continuity.
Calling this merely a "migration" minimizes the impact. From the Khoisan’s point of view, it was the first colonization.
1652: The Second Wave of Colonization
When the Dutch East India Company established a supply station at the Cape in 1652, the Khoikhoi still occupied the region. Initially, there was trade and coexistence. But as Dutch farming expanded and more Europeans arrived, Khoisan lands were expropriated. The Khoisan were driven into labor, subject to violence, and eventually outnumbered.
This second wave of colonization was faster, more systematic, and more violent. It imposed foreign languages, systems of governance, and racial hierarchies that would persist through apartheid and beyond.
But for the Khoisan, it was not an unprecedented trauma. It was a continuation of displacement — the second chapter of a story that began a thousand years earlier.
Two Colonizations, One Narrative
Why is the Bantu displacement of the Khoisan framed as “migration,” while European conquest is called “colonization”?
Because it suits post-colonial political narratives to unify Black Africans under a single victimhood story.
Because Europeans wrote most of the early history, and African liberation movements shaped the rest.
Because challenging this narrative threatens nation-building myths and raises uncomfortable questions about land, legitimacy, and identity.
Yet the Khoisan remember. And increasingly, they are speaking out.
Modern Erasure
Today, most Khoisan are classified under the bureaucratic label of “Coloured”, a category that denies their indigenous identity. Despite some symbolic recognition, they remain largely excluded from land restitution debates, indigenous rights frameworks, and the national story of liberation.
They are South Africa’s First People, but often treated as an afterthought in the very country they predate.
Conclusion: A Truth Too Inconvenient to Tell
If colonization means the forceful seizure of land, the displacement of native populations, and the imposition of foreign ways of life, then the Khoisan were colonized twice.
That one colonizer was European and the other African does not change the reality — it only changes the narrative.
And so the Black colonization of the Khoisan remains a truth too inconvenient to tell.
