I dug this up out of the ground today.

There’s a trail I walk often - what looks like an old, abandoned golf course. I’ve been coming here for the past three years, mostly barefoot. Families walk here. Kids. Older folks. And lately, some punks on dirt bikes tearing up the hills.
Over time, I’ve noticed the supposed “owner” or caretaker of this land trying to push back against the vandalism. Bollards blocking bridges. “You’re on camera” signs nailed to trees. Chain-link fences lining the property. And now… this medieval contraption buried just below the surface.
I’m guessing it was designed to blow the tires off those dirt bikes. But today, it almost tore through my foot.
It was a thick 2x4, about three feet long, held down by heavy steel stakes. Dozens of massive nails stuck out like fangs, angled for maximum damage. I felt it the instant it touched my skin. It hurt - but luckily, it didn’t pierce deep.
Even with shoes, it could’ve caused real harm.
And all I could think about was: Who builds something like this?
Someone out there is in their garage, probably late at night, constructing this thing - driven by pure malice. Not thinking about the kids. The old folks. Anyone else walking through. Just hellbent on “getting the fuckers.”
That level of tunnel vision… it’s dark. It’s not just anger. It’s a kind of madness. A need for control. A thirst for revenge, no matter the collateral damage.
And that’s the part that gets me. This isn’t just about a booby trap on a trail...
It’s a reminder: the capacity for cruelty still lives among us. To think what happened in Nazi Germany couldn’t happen again is naive. That darkness still exists. Sometimes it’s not in governments - it’s just in one guy, alone in his garage, with a hammer, nails, and a warped sense of justice.

VS gaat visa van Chinese studenten intrekken, onduidelijk hoeveel
De Amerikaanse regering wil de visa intrekken van Chinese studenten in het land. Het gaat onder meer om mensen die banden hebben met de communistische partij of die werkzaam zijn in een "cruciaal onderzoeksveld", schrijft minister Rubio van Buitenlandse Zaken in een korte mededeling op zijn website.
Rubio belooft "voortvarend" te werk te zullen gaan, maar het is nog niet duidelijk hoe hij precies invulling wil geven aan het besluit. Daardoor is ook nog niet bekend om hoeveel mensen het zal gaan. Na India is China het land waar de meeste buitenlandse studenten in de VS vandaan komen; vorig jaar waren het er zo'n 270.000.
De Republikeinse Partij pleit al langer voor een kritischer houding wat betreft Chinese studenten. De Republikeinen zijn bang dat de studenten op Amerikaanse universiteiten informatie in handen krijgen waar China economisch of militair van kan profiteren. Sinds zijn aantreden in januari liet Trump de bestaande rivaliteit met het land al hoog oplopen, met bijvoorbeeld torenhoge importheffingen.
Academische vrijheid onder druk
De aankondiging komt een dag nadat de regering-Trump bekend heeft gemaakt alle aanvragen van buitenlandse studenten tijdelijk op te schorten. Er moeten eerst strengere regels komen om sociale media van de aanvragers beter te controleren. "Ik wil er zeker van zijn dat die buitenlandse studenten wel van ons land houden", legde president Trump uit. Hij trad eerder al streng op tegen personen die bijvoorbeeld opkomen voor de Palestijnse zaak.
Beide maatregelen betekenen opnieuw een klap voor universiteiten in de VS. Draaide Trump eerder al de geldkraan dicht om door hem geëiste beleidsveranderingen af te dwingen, nu komt opnieuw een belangrijke inkomstenbron voor de onderwijsinstellingen in gevaar. Jaarlijks studeren er ruim een miljoen buitenlanders in de VS, al is het aantal Chinezen het afgelopen jaar afgenomen wegens de oplopende spanning.
Naast die algemene maatregelen is Trump de laatste tijd in het bijzonder vijandig tegenover Harvard: hij wilde die prestigieuze universiteit bij Boston afgelopen week verbieden überhaupt nog buitenlandse studenten les te geven. Hoewel een rechter daar tijdelijk een stokje voor stak, waarschuwen critici dat Trump met alle maatregelen de academische vrijheid in gevaar brengt.
China heeft nog niet op de nieuwe maatregel gereageerd. Eerder zei het land de rechten van burgers die naar de VS reizen fel te zullen verdedigen.
