Tallahassee, FL — Florida State University has announced plans to honor one of its most enigmatic former students, Jim Morrison, by installing a statue outside its School of Music. The tribute will celebrate Morrison’s enduring legacy as the frontman of The Doors and a defining voice of 1960s counterculture.
While Morrison only spent a brief time at FSU before transferring to UCLA, the university recognizes the lasting global impact he made on music, poetry, and performance art. The statue will stand outside the music department as a symbol of artistic rebellion, creativity, and fearless expression—hallmarks of Morrison’s legacy.
“Jim Morrison pushed boundaries in ways few artists dared,” said Dr. Elaine Hart, Dean of the FSU College of Music. “Though his time here was short, his influence on the world of music and art is undeniable—and we’re proud to call him one of our own.”
The statue will depict Morrison in his signature leather pants and open shirt, with a microphone in hand and his gaze cast upward—evoking his theatrical stage presence and deep poetic introspection. A granite pedestal will bear the inscription: “Jim Morrison – Poet, Rebel, Legend.”
Morrison’s time at Florida State was marked by a growing disinterest in conventional academia and a deepening attraction to the arts, philosophy, and performance. Even then, he showed the spark that would later ignite an entire generation.
This tribute has already gained traction among students, alumni, and fans around the country. A fundraising effort will kick off later this year, with the unveiling expected to coincide with the anniversary of Morrison’s birth.
“This is more than a statue,” said FSU President Richard McCullough. “It’s a recognition that art often starts in unexpected places—and that the seeds of greatness can be planted in the most unlikely of classrooms.”
With this statue, FSU not only honors the Lizard King himself but also invites its students to dream beyond boundaries—just as Morrison did.

Today I’m talking again to Patrik Baab, a German journalist and media critic who wrote the fantastic German-langauge book “On both sides of the Front: My Travels to Ukraine” and “Research: A toolkit for cliticizing the prevailing opinion.” Having worked for one of Germany’s state broadcasters before, he is intimately familiar with how the system works and I’m happy he agreed to help me make sense of a most bizarr recent program on the ZDF, that is Germany’s second state broadcaster–a little bit like NPR in the USA.
The “documentary” entitled “Putin’s Helper” or “Putins Aids” tells in sensational form how Trump, Musk, and others right around the US president are in cahoots with the Kremlin to undermine the United States.

Unsere Medien manipulieren ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste. Heute meldet die Regionalzeitung Die Rheinpfalz auf der Basis einer dpa/adh-Meldung: „Merz verspricht Hilfe gegen russische Bedrohung“. Im Einführungstext ist von der „wachsenden Gefahr durch Russland“ die Rede. Und dann wird ein Foto abgedruckt. Es zeigt den Bundeskanzler, den Bundesverteidigungsminister und deutsche Soldaten mit einer deutschen Flagge in Litauen. Im Text heißt es „Abschreckung und Verteidigung sind Deutschlands Top-Prioritäten“. Und zu Anfang des Textes wird wie selbstverständlich als vernünftig unterstellt, dass die Verteidigungsausgaben auf 3,5 Prozent des Bruttoinlandsproduktes erhöht werden und weitere 1,5 Prozent zusätzlich für militärisch notwendige Infrastruktur ausgegeben werden sollen, also 5 Prozent insgesamt. – Der helle Wahnsinn. Nicht für die Zeitung und nicht für den abgebildeten Kanzler und Minister.

Dann kamen einige deutsche Politiker nach dem Mauerbau von 1961 zur Besinnung. Im Sommer 1963 berichtete der SPD-Vorsitzende Brandt und sein Weggefährte Egon Bahr auf einer Tagung der Evangelischen Akademie in Tutzing von neuen Überlegungen: „Wandel durch Annäherung“ lautete jetzt die Parole. Das bedeutete praktisch: Verhandeln, zusammenarbeiten, sich annähern, um damit auch einen inneren Wandel beim politischen Gegner im Osten zu erreichen. Das betraf damals neben Russland auch Polen, Tschechien, Ungarn usw.
Diese Strategie hat funktioniert. Am 28. Oktober 1969 erklärte der neue Bundeskanzler, Willy Brandt: „Wir wollen ein Volk der guten Nachbarn sein“. Es kam zum Botschafteraustausch und zu verschiedenen Verträgen mit Moskau, mit Warschau, mit Prag. Der Kern dieser Verträge: Gewaltverzicht. – Zwischenfrage: Warum geht das heute nicht?
Und dann kam es zur KSZE, zur Konferenz für Sicherheit und Zusammenarbeit in Europa, und zur OSZE, zur Organisation für Sicherheit und Zusammenarbeit in Europa.
Heute suchen die verantwortlichen Politikerinnen und Politiker ihr Glück in der Aufrüstung. Das kann man gut und gerne die „Militarisierung der Politik“ nennen. Welch ein Rückschritt!! Welch ein Wahnsinn! Die meisten Medien folgen dem wie dumme Lämmer.
Im konkreten Fall hat die Geschichte auch noch ein Nebenkapitel: Kanzler Merz und Verteidigungsminister Pistorius haben sinnigerweise ein Land zur neuerlichen Verkündung ihrer dummen Sprüche gewählt, das beim letzten großen Krieg in Europa sowohl Opfer des deutschen Militärs und der Nazis als auch Opfer des sowjetischen Militärs geworden war: Litauen und die baltischen Staaten insgesamt.
Dass die beiden Politiker diesen Zirkus mitmachen, enttäuscht. Sie sind offensichtlich wie die meisten Medien Opfer westlicher Propaganda. Diese macht blind.
Der beschriebene Rückschritt lässt übrigens trotz allem hoffen. Es könnte ja wie zwischen den 1950er-Jahren und 1963/1969 noch einmal eine Wende zur Vernunft geben. Das setzt voraus, jetzt die laufende Eskalation der Konfrontation zu stoppen.
