If billion-dollar families fall for this trap, the rest of us don’t stand a chance against our own investment biases.
A few reasons smart money still hugs bad money:
(After working with family offices for the past 11 years)
1. Status-quo comfort: “It hasn’t blown up yet, so let it ride.”
2. Illiquidity denial: it’s hard to sell a trophy asset that’s quietly leaking alpha.
3. Narrative lock-in: the original story (“it’ll rebound”) feels safer than facing the unknown.
Translation: even the ultra-wealthy are human, and humans are terrible at pruning losers.
A simple test: replace the laggard with an asymmetric bet.
If you keep the underperformer (something like distressed real estate, stale private equity, or legacy bonds) you’re likely looking at a negative 0.5% CAGR over five years, which quietly drags your portfolio down by around 2%.
It’s wealth erosion you barely notice until compounding turns it painful.
But if you swap just 2% into Bitcoin (historically volatile but with a 10-year average of 40% CAGR) and even if it only returns 20% CAGR over five years, that move alone lifts your portfolio by 0.4%.
Your downside is capped at 2%.
And your upside might be a 400 basis point boost.
Move that allocation to 5%, and at the same conservative 20% CAGR, you gain 1% at the portfolio level.

He calls it the worst financial investment of his life, as he spent his Bitcoin at $25,000 and watched it double soon after. Yet, he says it was necessary—to give the local Bitcoin community a physical space to meet, transact, and build something real.
I’ve often said on Nostr that this isn’t the ideal time to start a business if you hold Bitcoin, since its value keeps rising.
But I get it—Ive seen others on Nostr think about doing the same thing, including myself, we all have been tempted to do the same: start any type of business just to say:
“We Accept Bitcoin.”
As the fiat businesses crumble many of us Bitcoiners will have to jump in and replace them.
My best advice is if you dont own the property then it's not worth it. Keep hodling.

Why wouldn't they keep it? It costs no more to keep a kids fingerprints than a serial killers fingerprints.
If "when you were a kid" is 80's or sooner...they're permanent in the IC. Before then, maybe stuff gets lost, but those days are looong gone.

When I was a kid I remember my parents took me to some local police event where they took my fingerprints and made a copy they gave to my parents. It was geared as a system to help parents if your kid ever gets abducted or something like that. Does anyone know if the government kept any of this collection? I've always thought about that over the years that I'm likely already in some system somewhere
