For an administration and Pentagon that claim to be the most “transparent in history,” recent actions suggest otherwise. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth issued a memo today announcing new physical control measures for journalists assigned to the Pentagon Press Corps.
Effective immediately, reporters are no longer allowed to access the offices of the Secretary of Defense or the Joint Chiefs without an escort from the Public Affairs Office. Aside from limited areas—including the press office, press secretary’s office, food court, and designated entrances—journalists must now be formally escorted to and from all other parts of the building by authorized DoD personnel from the relevant agencies or military departments.
Secretary Hegseth defended the new restrictions, stating they are necessary to “reduce the opportunity for in-person inadvertent or unauthorized disclosures.” This comes despite the fact that most “leaks or unauthorized disclosures” at the DoD since January have reportedly originated from Hegseth himself or other senior Pentagon officials, not from reporters.
