硬めの長編小説を読破したのは十数年ぶりやもしれない。文学に蒙い私がこんな評論めいたことを公開の場でするのは気が引けるのだが、超一流の人間観察というのはこれほど徹底したものなのかと驚いた。こういう驚きは社会学のゴフマンの断片を読んで以来である。私はもともと小説というものが苦手で読まないのだが、今回はその分析と叙述との凄みに圧倒されてしまい、500頁に垂んとする本文を一気呵成に読まされた。作中のジョゼフ・グランの言葉を借りればすっかり「脱帽！」の心地である。
「ただ、世間はそいつに病名をつける勇気がなかったのさ、即座にはね。世論というやつは、神聖なんだ――冷静を失うな、何よりもまず冷静を失うな、さ。」(p. 53)
