The Irish government approved on Tuesday (27) the draft of a bill to prohibit the importation of goods from Israeli settlements considered illegal under international law, a unprecedented measure for a European Union member. Last year, the International Court of Justice declared that Israel's occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip is illegal under international law, an advisory opinion that Ireland said guided its decision. "The government agreed to advance legislation that prohibits trade with illegal settlements in occupied Palestinian territories (...) The government considers this an obligation under international law," said a Foreign Ministry spokesperson to AFP. The bill concerns products such as fruits, vegetables, or wood, but will not include services, such as tourism or technology. Before the cabinet decision, Foreign Minister Simon Harris said he hopes other European Union countries will follow Ireland's example. Around 500,000 Israelis live in settlements considered illegal by the UN, amidst 3 million Palestinians, in the West Bank, occupied by Israel since 1967. In May 2024, Ireland, Norway, and Spain, joined by Slovenia a month later, recognized the Palestinian state. It is expected that the bill will be approved by the Legislature and become law from the fall (which begins in September in the northern hemisphere).
