It’s a way to write something permanently on the Bitcoin blockchain without messing with the money itself.
How is OP_RETURN used?
- Businesses might use it to prove ownership of a digital asset.
- Developers might use it to timestamp documents, proving they existed at a certain time.
- Some people even send messages that stay on Bitcoin forever—a form of decentralized communication.
What happens if OP_RETURN disappears?
- Less Flexibility for Bitcoin: People wouldn’t be able to store small bits of data on-chain, limiting innovation.
- Impact on Certain Apps: Many blockchain-based applications rely on OP_RETURN for data storage. Without it, they might need to find alternatives or move to other blockchains.
- Bitcoin Becomes Purely Financial: Some Bitcoiners argue OP_RETURN isn’t necessary, since Bitcoin is meant to be money first. But its removal would make Bitcoin’s blockchain only about transactions, not additional functionality.
In short, OP_RETURN is Bitcoin’s way of allowing small, useful pieces of data to be recorded permanently. If it disappeared, Bitcoin would still work as money, but it would lose a bit of its creative and technical flexibility. Hope that clears it up!

By far the biggest problem BTC being used as a store of value used for speculation, vs a currency. It's made L1 for daily transactions far too expensive.
All bets are off if the centralized powers that be continue to undermine adoption by offering their own competing L2 network that lets them print money against their L1 holdings.

Good morning Bitcoiners! How are you doing?
I would like to share with you some reflections on the program I just watched on "Canale Italia", with guests Gigi Turla and Federico Rivi. During the hour-long program, a brief summary of the Brescia 2025 Bitcare Forum was given, and then some reflections from the audience were broadcast live (live call-in from home).
What emerged strongly from the telephone interventions was the vast amount of misinformation that still surrounds bitcoin. We listened to calls ranging from those who call it a scam, to those who have lost money due to uninformed decisions, to those who do not understand its economic-financial nature, considering it volatile and without intrinsic value, to those who said that their bank has blatantly forbidden them to invest in Bitcoin.
This situation reflects a well-known phenomenon: in an era of free and widespread access to information, false beliefs and confusion paradoxically proliferate, ergo: disinformation. It is crucial, as the guests have pointed out, to rely on competent sources and people to really understand this field.
I invite everyone to reflect on the importance of proper education and dissemination of accurate information to help create a more aware and prepared community, this applies to any discourse.
