Arriva Hop-Return con una transazione che occupa un intero blocco
Se qualcuno pensava che la discussione sull’OP_Return si stesse raffreddando, ecco la novità destinata a buttare benzina sul fuoco: Hop-Return
Se ne è discusso nello space di giovedì 15 maggio 2025.
Nel blocco 896722 minato dalla mining pool Mara ieri 14 maggio 2025 alle 23:06 ora italiana, a parte la coinbase transaction, c’è una sola transazione da quasi 4 Mb che riempie l’intero blocco.
Le fee che sono state impostate per questa transazione sono di 0,061 bitcoin, al cambio attuale oltre $6K.
Sarebbe sufficiente per gettare benzina sulla recente polemica relativa alla rimozione dei limiti dell’OP_Return nella prossima release di Bitcoin core, ma c’è di più.
All’interno della transazione viene riportato il documento sul protocollo Hop-Return e sui NST, Non-Standard Tokens.
Non c’è attualmente nessun programma per far funzionare questo protocollo, e si vuole che l’intero ecosistema NST sia interamente governato dal consenso sociale.
Che dietro questo progetto ci sia una buona dose di ironia, lo si capisce anche dal messaggio:
Ringraziamo sentitamente coloro che sostengono di preservare i limiti di dimensione standard per OP_RETURN di Bitcoin. Sono precisamente queste restrizioni che rendono possibili protocolli non convenzionali come questo.

Cos'è l'Hop-Return Protocol e come si differenzia dagli altri protocolli token?
L'Hop-Return Protocol è un meta-protocollo che utilizza messaggi JSON codificati in UTF-8 integrati in output OP_RETURN non standard e di grandi dimensioni sulle transazioni Bitcoin. Serve come strato di trasporto per i Non-Standard Tokens (NST). Si differenzia da protocolli come Ordinals per l'utilizzo di un sistema esplicitamente basato su account (invece di un sistema basato su UTXO) per trasferire i token tramite gli output OP_RETURN. Una caratteristica distintiva è l'adozione intenzionale di output OP_RETURN di dimensioni non standard (almeno 100 byte), che vanno contro le attuali policy di relay dei nodi standard di Bitcoin, conferendogli un fascino "Cypherpunk".
Cosa sono i Non-Standard Tokens (NST) e come vengono emessi?
I Non-Standard Tokens (NST) sono implementazioni di token strutturate e guidate dal protocollo, specificamente ottimizzate per le grandi transazioni OP_RETURN utilizzate dall'Hop-Return Protocol. L'emissione degli NST avviene esclusivamente tramite transazioni inviate a un indirizzo specifico, soprannominato la "Mother of All Transactions" (MOAT), la madre di tutte le transazioni.
Questo indirizzo funziona come un "contratto di emissione muto". Per ricevere NST, l'utente deve inviare un "tributo" alla MOAT, che include un minimo di 2001 satoshi e un payload OP_RETURN di almeno 100 byte contenente l'indirizzo Bitcoin del destinatario seguito da uno spazio. La quantità di NST ricevuti dipende dall'ammontare dei satoshi inviati (al netto dei 2000 satoshi minimi) e dall'altezza attuale del blocco al momento della transazione, con tassi di emissione che diminuiscono al raggiungimento di determinate altezze.
Qual è il significato della "Mother of All Transactions" (MOAT) e del suo indirizzo?
La "Mother of All Transactions" (MOAT) è la transazione Bitcoin iniziale che segna l'inizio dell'ecosistema NST. Contiene, in output OP_RETURN di grandi dimensioni, il documento che definisce il protocollo e un'immagine che commemora la sua nascita.

è l'unico indirizzo a cui devono essere inviate le transazioni per l'emissione di nuovi NST.
L'utilizzo di un payload OP_RETURN volutamente grande per la MOAT crea una barriera alla sua replicazione, distinguendo le transazioni MOAT legittime dai tentativi insufficienti. I fondi inviati alla MOAT sono destinati a supportare la creazione di ulteriori blocchi con grandi OP_RETURN per garantire la rete (generando fees per i miner) e per onorare la visione del protocollo.
Come avviene il trasferimento degli NST una volta emessi?
A differenza del processo di emissione, i trasferimenti di NST utilizzano il Hop-Return Protocol tramite un sistema di "meta-contabilità" basato su account. Ciò significa che i trasferimenti non sono legati a UTXO specifici, ma piuttosto a saldi virtuali associati agli indirizzi Bitcoin. Le transazioni di trasferimento di NST devono includere un output OP_RETURN contenente dati JSON codificati in UTF-8 in un formato specifico. Questo formato include campi come "version", "to" (indirizzo del destinatario), "amount" (che può essere un numero intero positivo o la stringa "all"), "type" (attualmente solo "transfer") e un "message" opzionale. L'indirizzo del mittente con i saldi NST deve essere presente negli input della transazione Bitcoin che include l'output OP_RETURN del trasferimento. Le transazioni con più input e output seguono una logica FIFO (First-In, First-Out) per determinare da quale saldo dell'indirizzo input vengono detratti i token.
Perché il protocollo incoraggia l'uso di output OP_RETURN non standard e di grandi dimensioni?
Il protocollo abbraccia l'uso di output OP_RETURN non standard e di grandi dimensioni precisamente a causa dei limiti di dimensione standard imposti dalle attuali policy di relay dei nodi Bitcoin
Invece di vedere queste restrizioni come limitazioni, il protocollo le considera opportunità.
L'uso di payload grandi rende le transazioni NST non standard, il che, ironicamente, conferisce loro un tratto distintivo e "Cypherpunk".
Richiedendo l'uso di servizi specializzati come Marathon Digital Holdings' Slipstream per garantire la conferma di queste transazioni (in quanto non verrebbero propagate dalle regole di relay standard), il protocollo mette in risalto la sua natura unica e sperimenta i confini del design delle transazioni su Bitcoin. I creatori del protocollo ringraziano coloro che sostengono il mantenimento dei limiti standard di OP_RETURN, poiché sono queste restrizioni a rendere possibile questo tipo di protocollo non convenzionale.
Come si affronta la potenziale sfida del filtraggio delle transazioni NST o Hop-Return?
Il protocollo riconosce la possibilità che i servizi possano iniziare a filtrare le transazioni NST o Hop-Return a causa della loro natura non standard o per altri motivi. Per affrontare questa sfida, il protocollo suggerisce di sfruttare la compatibilità con NOSTR ("Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays").
NOSTR può essere utilizzato dalla comunità come un livello di trasmissione aperto e pubblico per distribuire le transazioni non confermate di NST in formato raw hex. Questo permette ai miner di competere in modo equo e trasparente per includere queste transazioni nei nuovi blocchi, fungendo da soluzione temporanea fino a quando le policy del mempool di Bitcoin non accoglieranno nativamente tali transazioni. Questo approccio mira a supportare la decentralizzazione e l'equità all'interno dell'ecosistema minerario.
Qual è la durata dell'emissione dei Non-Standard Tokens (NST)?
L'emissione dei Non-Standard Tokens (NST) ha una scadenza basata sull'altezza dei blocchi Bitcoin. L'emissione è suddivisa in diverse fasi:
Fino all'altezza del blocco 909,420 inclusa: la quantità di NST ricevuti è (satoshi inviati - 2000) * 2.
Dall'altezza del blocco 909,421 all'altezza del blocco 1,000,000 inclusa: la quantità di NST ricevuti è (satoshi inviati - 2000).
Dopo l'altezza del blocco 1,000,000: non è più consentita alcuna emissione di token NST v1.
Questo meccanismo incentivizza l'emissione anticipata e pone un limite massimo all'offerta dei token NST v1 emessi tramite la MOAT.
Come si definiscono e si comunicano le regole e gli eventuali cambiamenti del protocollo?
Le regole del Hop-Return Protocol e dei Non-Standard Tokens (NST) sono definite principalmente nel documento che descrive il protocollo. L'ecosistema NST è governato interamente dal consenso sociale definito in questo documento al momento del lancio. Per quanto riguarda gli eventuali cambiamenti futuri al protocollo o alle sue regole, l'unica fonte autorevole di tali modifiche saranno i futuri output OP_RETURN provenienti dall'indirizzo MOAT ufficiale
