Nip-04 → Deprecate asap
Nip-17 → Use Mail UX and terminology, because it's not "DMs" nor "Private Groups". It's messages going from one mailbox to others.
Nip-EE → Private Groups, with something that you can actually call "Chat".

It (only) allows you to respond to NIp-04 WITH Nip-17, in the same conversation.
As if the other person can totally see that in their Nip-04.
The blending of different specs under one banner "DMs" is causing tons of messages to never be seen.

When I build a Chat app with:
- Private groups (MLS)
- Public Communities (#communikeys)
... that both use kind 9 chat messages.
How do you really expect me to mix in Nip-17 and call it "DMs" or "Chat Rooms"?
When the kind 14 messages used in that Nip:
- are less secure, private and direct than the MLS I already have
- don't make the conversation have a global state
- can optionally be signed for dispute regulation
- have a subject tag, like email
- can be forked and forwarded, like email
- are perfect for one-off communication in Marketplaces,etc... like email
No thanks.
It's Nostr Mail.
Because that's what it's good for.
Not Nostr Direct Messages.
My users don't need those false promises and confusion.

In @Zapchat I cannot:
- have Communities and Private Groups (both with a very clear Chat group UX and global state)
- then also mix in "Messages" or "DMs" in there somehow, that have entoerly different UX/UI characteristics
Or have a separate tab "Messages" for it, lol.
The other stuff aren't messages??? 🙃

Sure, I get that these two points of view exists and I think that ultimately the debate can only be resolved at the consensus level.
I find it however pretty disingenuous to claim that no objective statement can be made about the nature of Bitcoin, it muddies the waters without really benefiting anyone IMO.
