been thinking more about this, i think the root "plex" means "many parts" like the greek "polymer" and "com" means "with" in most modern latinic languages (or con-), and "plic-" is a derivative of plex. it is definitely a "soft" expression in the sense of qualitative, where in greek it might be called "monad" or "diad" or "polyadic" or even "variadic"
greek use in mathematics mostly is about parameters in formulae, and it is used a lot in chemistry such as polymer and dimer and synthetic, the word synergy, and the word energy, are greek words, and just remembering that the italians were at one time the most groundbreaking mathematicians so it's a complex mix of influences how latin versus greek got into scientific language. language itself is a latin based word, and mathematics, is greek.
the main difference is that the greeks were way ahead in mathematics a long time before the latins got into the game, so our modern nomenclature is mixed among these things. there was also a lot of more recent great mathematicians from france such as Henri Poincaire and also germanic folks like Mandelbrot.
and even, more recently, a lot of great israeli mathematicians were heavily influential in cryptography, such as Shamir, and the german Schnorr, and the dutch Rijndael, actually, the dutch have been a huge influence on especially network theory and complex systems in the last 100 years.
but as a rule, greek tends to be mathematics, and latin tends to be more abstract.
